MET GALA 2018
Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
by Dennis Stokely
The fanciest red-carpet in the world is always held on the first Monday in May and since 1995, it has been hosted by Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour. Annually, this Super Bowl of the beauty industry kicks off the Costume Institute Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Catholic iconography was the inspiration for superstars and supermodels this year, and once again, Rihanna pushed the thematic envelope with her papal-inspired costume and ruled the night.
Here is a recap of my red-carpet favorites.
RIHANNA
This custom-made Maison Margiela by John Galliano dress, cape and the medieval tiara is an instant top 10, all-time, Met Gala look. The intricate construction of the garment with thousands of Swarovski crystals and pearls is couture perfection. Rihanna’s smoldering smokey eyes and smoking hot body brings a sinful playfulness to her homage to the first ever female Pope.
JENNIFER LOPEZ
Kudos to Jennifer’s glam-squad for always nailing it. From head to toe, I am obsessed with this look. As a hairstylist, I love the deep-side part and luxurious texture of her shoulder-grazing bob. Her custom Balmain gown is jaw-dropping – red, white and blue is a tricky color combination and the fit and flare of this gown is genius. This could be Jennifer’s best look ever, and that is saying a lot.
KIM KARDASHIAN WEST
Possibly the most famous girl on the planet right now, Kim shuts down the red-carpet. This Versace gown with its amazing bodice and embroidered crosses looks like she was dipped in gold. Donatella Versace personally worked with Kim on the final edit of this masterpiece. Her Bridgette Bardot inspired high-ponytail gives a sleek and modern finish to her look. Kim is hands down the it-girl of the glamorous life.
SOLANGE
Certainly, the most original look, Beyonce’s sister asked her Twitter followers to vote on her 4 top choices before she could say “yes to the dress.” Solange later tweeted, “I feel heavenly in black!” Her Du-rag and halo headpiece wins the night for giving a nod to an old-school,
rarely seen hairdo. The Iris Van Herpen black ink, inflatable dress reeks rock-star and bad-girl. Maybe she was dressed for a visit to see the cardinal in the confession booth, fun, fun, fun!
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT: MADONNA
The original Catholic troublemaker, remember when she was banned by the Vatican? Madonna has danced with religious undertones and overtones for decades. The videos for her megahits “Like a Virgin” and “Express Yourself” are chock full of Catholic references. She stunned the audience at the Met Gala last night with a performance art tribute of her music- old and new. I have always wanted to style her hair, never have. But, you never know!
Hence, my motto, solving the problems of the world –one bombshell at a time!
