WHAT:
The Original Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax, Los Angeles’ favorite gathering place since 1934, will soon welcome its biggest visitor in history — a 32-foot tall, 2-ton replica statue of King Tut’s Guardian, paving the way to Metropolitan Fashion Week where it will serve as a backdrop to a King Tut-inspired opening night and fashion design contest.
A supersized replica of the original artifact on display at the blockbuster exhibition KING TUT: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh, the statue will be on view for the public for the first time beside the iconic Farmers Market Clock Tower from August 30-September 27.
Visitors who post photos with the statue to their social media platforms can enter a sweepstakes to win prizes including:

More than 150 Hancock Park Elementary students welcomed the Original Farmers Market’s biggest visitor in history – a 32-foot tall, 2-ton King Tut Guardian statue, a supersized replica of the original artifact on display at the California Science Center exhibition KING TUT: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh, on Thursday, Aug 30, 2018 in Los Angeles.
The statue will serve as a backdrop to a King Tut-inspired opening night and fashion design contest for Metropolitan Fashion Week in September.

–In addition, 160 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students from Hancock Park Elementary School will also join us to watch this giant visitor come together.

The statue will be located in the Farmers Market Plaza next to the Clock Tower, adjacent to the Fairfax parking lot.
WHY:
As part of Metropolitan Fashion Week Sept. 27-Oct. 7, designers will showcase one masterpiece gown or costume inspired by KING TUT: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh, now in its world premiere showing at the California Science Center. The exhibition features the authentic Guardian statue from KingTut’s tomb, on view outside of Egypt for the first time.
About the statue:
One of a pair that flanked the sealed entryway when his tomb was discovered in 1922, the original Guardian stands about six-feet tall. The larger-than-life reproduction was recreated in painstaking detail to stand guard around the world during the final tour of his treasures.
KING TUT: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh contains the largest assembly of artifacts and gold from the boy king’s tomb ever on public display outside of Egypt and the latest findings science has revealed about King Tut’s life and death.
The exhibition is presented by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, IMG and the California Science Center.
