Ron Robinson (Fred Segal, Ron Robinson Stores) Talks about 40 Years of Curating “COOL”!

It’s not often that I get to talk to a legend in the retail business. Ron Robinson is well-known for his super-smart retailing savvy as well as his innovative approach to that sector with unique collaborations within various sectors (beauty, menswear, childrenswear and toys, womenswear and home decor) along with creating fabulous celebrity events.

Ron Robinson celebrates 40 years in the retail fashion business with the release of some special capsule collections and celebratory events at the brand’s flagship Santa Monica location and their original location on Melrose Avenue.

In an era when online storefronts are hailed as the wave of the future, Ron Robinson proves that brick and mortar retail is far from obsolete. Recognized as one of the original pioneers with his approach to building his own unique brand, Robinson has shaped four decades of Los Angeles fashion and changed the face of West Coast retail. When most store owners are worried about selling, Robinson’s visionary process stems from a focus on the bigger picture:

“I enjoy the passion that is designed into the product,” he explains, “I like to source new vendors, look at what each person is doing and why then help position them in a retail setting that can serve as a launching platform for their career.” And at the same time offer our consumer something unique.”

Having built and cultivated his collection of hard-to-find labels through the severe highs and lows of the last 40 years – including the 2008 recession and the meteoric rise of online shopping – Robinson views each challenge as an opportunity to reinvent his brand and the vendors it represents. While location has certainly played a role in his success, with stores in Santa Monica and on Melrose Avenue, Robinson attributes his continued progress to a “new-world vision” coupled with “old-world values.” Relying on a close-knit, dedicated and talented team, some of whom have been involved with the brand for 24 years, Robinson enjoys a strong following of loyal customers who return not just for the curated fashion, but for the experience of recreating themselves.
