Arínzano, one of only 17 official Vinos de Pago (DOP) estates in all of Spain, announced the introduction of its 2015 Arinzano Agricultura Biológica Merlot, the first certified organic variety to join the brand’s award-winning portfolio.
The new merlot was treated exclusively with natural processes while avoiding intensive agriculture, and without artificial alterations either in the vineyard or winery. While this is the first wine made from certified organic grapes, Arinzano is dedicated to organic viticulture with a low-environmental impact, in addition to the use of only certified environmental materials in the construction of the winery.
This new vintage is made from 100% Organic Merlot grapes. The color is intense, deep cherry red.
The nose is very fine with subtle hints of black fruits; Morello cherries, sloe berries, and ripe medlar along with spice and underbrush – nutmeg and dry bracken.
The palate is full-bodied, well-balanced with silky tannins and perfectly-integrated oak.
The finish is long and elegant with a complex aftertaste of minerality and noble oak.
The wine is aged 14 months in French oak, 50% new barrels and 50% second use barrels, with great potential evolution in the bottle.
“This merlot is a testament to Arínzano’s core principles of creating award-winning and innovative wines, while also utilizing and protecting the distinct terroir of the brand’s estate,” said Manuel Louzada, CEO of the Stoli Group Wine Portfolio and Chief Winemaker for Arínzano. “This marks a huge milestone in our history as we enter a new subcategory of wines and establish our brand as a pioneer in the organic wine industry.”
Situated in the northeast of Spain between Rioja and Bordeaux, Arínzano’s vineyards were first planted in the 11th century. The stunning property features a variety of elevations and soil types which contribute to the uniqueness of its wines. Arínzano is a protected area rich in natural habitat and holds the distinction of being the only Spanish winery certified by the WWF for its sustainability and environmentally friendly agriculture. The estate was designed by renowned Spanish architect and Harvard Dean of Architecture, Rafael Moneo, with the intention of seamlessly blending into the surrounding natural environment.
Arínzano was the first estate in northern Spain to be recognized as a Vino de Pago. The Pago classification is Spain’s highest category for winemaking, above D.O.Ca. It is awarded only to estates that exhaustively demonstrate not only an excellent and unique climate and terroir, but also a winemaking that turns these inherent qualities into extraordinary wines.

About Arínzano:
Located in Navarra, Spain between Rioja and Bordeaux, the Arínzano estate occupies a valley formed by the last slopes of the Pyrenees mountains and is divided by the winding waters of the River Ega. The unique microclimates of the estate create a singular environment perfectly suited for the production of the highest quality wines. With vines dating back to the 11th century, Arínzano specializes in producing modern wines while remaining true to its Spanish roots and features a lineup of wines that highlight the traditional Spanish Tempranillo, as well as French varietals of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Arínzano holds the distinction of being the first PAGO rated winery in northern Spain. This classification is only awarded to estates that exhaustively demonstrate not only an excellent and unique climate and terroir, but also a winemaking that turns these inherent qualities into extraordinary wines. Designed by famed Spanish architect, Rafael Moneo, the estate was created using environmentally friendly materials and designed to seamlessly blend into the terroir it occupies.
With a commitment to conservation through organic, low-impact viticulture, natural waste water filtration and a preservation of half the estate for autochthonous flora and fauna, Arínzano is the only Spanish winery certified by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for its sustainable and environmentally responsible agriculture.
