How To Embrace Self-Love In 2019! Making the Best of Yourself!

How To Embrace Self-Love In 2019

Self-love has become more and more prominent in the media and society within the past couple of years. We’ve seen women standing up for themselves and for other women. We’ve seen models being embraced no matter their size and movies and TV shows showing more diversity and love for people of all sizes, shapes, and colors. All of this is a culmination of acts of self-love. One person felt confident enough to speak up, educate, and encouraged others to follow.

Social media plays a huge part in this movement. With the growing popularity of Instagram, it’s difficult to not get sucked into a world that is digitally altered. That’s why some celebrities have made it their mission to embrace their insecurities and talk about things that matter, like learning to love yourself just the way you are.

Plus-size model Ashley Graham teamed up with TV host and comedian, Ellen Degeneres for a new digital series titled “Fearless” . Every episode is meant to “empower everyday people to be totally, unapologetically fearless.”

Kendall Jenner is also sharing her insecurities and speaking up. The model and social media star has been struggling with acne for years and recently announced a partnership with Proactiv. Jenner says,

“Literally no one is perfect — not one person. I know that everyone shows a lifestyle online, but I think people have to remind themselves that everything’s very curated.”

These two examples have a huge impact on today’s society and will hopefully lift other women up who may be experiencing some self-doubt.

Here are some ways you can embrace self-love this year:

Support people and brands who embody self-love

Find people and brands that support self -love and self-confidence. An easy way to incorporate this into your life is to shop brands that don’t use photoshop (in social media or ads) and are inclusive of all sizes in their stores. Clean out your Instagram feed of too many unrealistic photos or people who trigger you to not feel 100% confident in your skin. Instead, find men and women who empower you and continue to make you feel good about loving yourself!

Michelle Lam is a thought leader in the self-love space. She is the founder of
True&Co , a company dedicated to making women feel their best, by designing supportive bras that are made for every shape and size. When Michelle was asked why she is grateful for her body, she said,

“I’ve put my body through a ton of punishment (late nights working, not enough exercise, planes, trains, and cars all over the world). It’s still here, serving me well and looking pretty good. I look at myself in the mirror and I feel a fresh kind of optimism like I’m going to live a long time and have an amazing, interesting life and I got this body to carry me through it.”

Let’s encourage other women to share this mindset this year! The bodies we’ve put through a ton of ups and downs are the same bodies we will have for the rest of our lives. It’s important to appreciate it.

Singer, Rihanna, launched a cosmetics brand called Fenty Beauty in September 2017. The launch of their foundations sparked headlines. They come in 50 shades, allowing every woman to find makeup that makes them feel beautiful while matching their skin color. The Barbados born singer says,

“Makeup is there for you to have fun with. It should never feel like pressure. It should never feel like a uniform. Feel free to take chances, and take risks, and dare to do something new or different.”

Stepping outside of your comfort zone can do so much for your self-confidence. Taking the first step is the hardest part.

Don’t compare yourself to others

It’s easy to scroll through Instagram and compare yourself to the women who appear to be “real,” but in many ways are just doing a job for promotions. Most pictures we see online are heavily edited or have a team of people behind them, which is something most everyday women don’t have. Keep that in mind next the time you get hung up on a model’s effortless Instagram photo in a barely there bikini on the beach (here’s looking at you, Gigi Hadid!!).

Be bold in every way possible. If you’re someone who loves fashion, then make fashion a new priority in your life. A new jacket or pair of earrings might make you feel more confident as you head into work on Monday. Never be afraid to express yourself. It’s important to have an outlet and use it effectively. If you love art, then keep creating it, if you love to exercise, keep exercising, and if you love writing, keep writing!

Self-confidence is attractive and so powerful. People often feel more attracted to partners who are sure of themselves and look confident in their skin. Make confidence your new mantra!

Avoid negative self-talk:

When you look in the mirror in the morning, instead of picking on things you don’t like, focus on the things you do like about yourself. Maybe you love when your hair is curled, or the way a pair of new jeans make your legs look. Take those little things and make them the focal point, instead of any negative thoughts.

It’s important to find the reason why you’re grateful for your body. Our bodies have been with us through so much, so don’t forget to acknowledge that. Thank your body daily for what it does for you! Whether it be playing sports, lots of travel, having kids, or even just going to and from work daily.

Turn Negatives into Positives!

Last but not least, always turn your negatives into positives. It may seem hard at first but once you make a habit of it, you’ll find it easier than you think. Find the silver lining no matter how bad a day is or how down you’re feeling. Using a journal to write down your feelings is a great way to move on with your day and focus on de-stressing.

Use these tips and tricks to change your mindset and focus on loving yourself in 2019. Don’t forget you’re the only one you have to please at the end of the day. Keep your chin up and focus on all the amazing things that make you- YOU!
