If you aren’t familiar with the vegetable known as jicama, you are about to get a crash course in it. It’s a rather strange turnip-like vegetable.
When you see it in a grocery store, it will look like the brown vegetable on the left. To make it edible, you have to peel this vegetable which is quite a challenging task because jicama is not a soft vegetable but quite hard and it has lots of bumps and “valleys” that you need to peel around OR you cut off the highest points and keep the larger pieces. When it’s peeled, it looks like the white side because the flesh is white and very crisp. It’s like a big potato that when raw is very crunchy and slightly juicy. When cooked it softens up a bit.
I was given a free product from Xica in exchange for my feature. The sample made it much easier for me to write about jicama as a whole and the brand specifically. While I was impressed at Natural Products Expo West, it’s easy to forget what I saw there and the noodles were very helpful to show off the new ways of presenting jicama!
The great part about the jicama is that it’s healthy, low -calorie and provides a lot of “crunch”. When I first tried it, I loved eating it, but the preparation was a real bear. It’s not easy to peel jicama. I found a vegetable peeler to be a difficult tool to use in peeling jicama (not at all like a potato)! I wound up using a sharp knife to cut away most of the skin to make it edible- and working slowly so that I wouldn’t cut myself.

When I went to Natural Products Expo West earlier this year, I saw several food lines that were featuring jicama in various ways– all pre-packaged and to be sold in refrigerated produce sections! One brand circled back to me and has reached out to me about talking about their line of jicama foods– which they have quite an array of products. I loved the idea of pre-cut tortillas, chips, sticks, slaw and other ways that Xica created for selling directly to consumers, thus cutting (literally) the work that preparing raw jicama requires!
This brand is Xica (SHE-KA). I am sharing this line with you so that you can find it in a market near you or ask your market to carry it.
As I mentioned, the Natural Products Expo West featured a slew of jicama product lines. Jicama is the next “it” veggie, named one of this year’s 8 hottest healthy food and beverage trends. A Mexican yam bean that looks like a cross between a potato and a beet, jicama features a creamy white flesh and mildly sweet, crisp texture (similar to an apple). This powerhouse vegetable’s high inulin content promotes bone health and protects against osteoporosis, with plenty of vitamins to boost immunity while improving overall digestion.
Enjoying the amazing health benefits of jicama is so simple with the delicious line of products that’s rich in Vitamin C and gut-boosting, prebiotic fiber, this grain-free, high carb superfood is the perfect addition to any Paleo, Whole30 or low-sugar diet.
Xica(SHE-KA) has all of the delicious, ready-to-eat snacks and pre-made veggie combinations to take the guesswork out of preparing and enjoying this low-calorie, multi-tasking ingredient.
Xica’s line of pre-packaged, ready-to-eat options available in eco-friendly, easy-open packaging makes jicama an easy addition to any meal. Try healthy Jicama Tacos, ready to serve and loaded with fresh ingredients to give tastebuds a wakeup call and pump up the nutrition.
Enjoy sweet fresh-cut pineapple or lightly tart cranberries, or a savory combination of spinach and cranberry, kale and cranberry, carrot and cucumber, or cactus made with Xica’s jicama tortillas!
Mango tacos using Xica jicama tortillas
If you want a traditional taco, you can use the tortilla raw or you can microwave them very briefly so that they are warm, which is really nice when you are serving tacos made of meat, poultry or fish.
Xica has more than just tortillas! There are crisp raw chips and spears- both of which can be used as a snack by themselves or served as an appetizer.
Spears also make a great cocktail garnish and give them a bit of zip by sprinkling them with some cayenne pepper or Tagine.
Crowd-pleasing Xica jicama adds a rich depth of flavor to any meal and is compatible with gluten-free, vegan and most other diets. Low in calories and sugar, it’s the perfect choice for diabetics, athletes, kids, and anyone looking for nutritious snack options that curb cravings without raising glucose levels.
Avocado and Xica jicama salad!
The latest Xica jicama product is NOODLES!
You can make up a salad using the noodles raw or you can gently microwave them for a few minutes then pour on spaghetti sauce of your choice. The noodles are very crispy and crunchy. I was given a container of the noodles to try and we liked them very much.
While jicama can be consumed raw or cooked to al dente, it’s important for you to know that ALL jicama products need to be refrigerated when in their original packaging or after you have opened the packaging to eat them raw or cook them. Once the package is open, there is a rather limited shelf life. The great thing about Xica’s jicama products is that it’s super easy to kill a container in one day. I love this brand’s ingenuity and willingness to try new and unusual presentation.
