5 Classic Cocktails You Can Easily Make At Home During Quarantine!

All of California is under quarantine. It’s not bad, but it’s not pretty because while one might think it’s a piece of cake to be under quarantine, you can’t really go much of anyplace because almost everything is shut down.  (BIG SIGH here!)

While most of my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances have been talking about what we are doing, we all would like to have a great cocktail whether we are on the phone or doing Facetime.  We want to have some nifty cocktails to take the sharp, sharp edge off the quarantine experience. Just as I think about all the things I am missing  (friends,  shopping,  meeting for coffee), guest blogger Harold Camaya sends me a  “pitch” for an article about “quarantine ” cocktails! I personally love that idea and I am sharing Harold’s article with you today!

The stay at home and quarantine season is giving us ample opportunity and time to stay indoors. Though this little time is perfect for self-reflection and has some quality time with our loved ones. What we might be missing most is eating out, and our happy hours.

It is a good idea to give a little break to spiked up screen activities during quarantine, and instead get your hand on trying some food and drinks. You can go for amazing brandy cocktails recipes or try something that does not require fancy liquors and comes with variation so you can swap and work around with what you have at the moment. With over the counter ingredients and easy recipes, we have come up with some fantastic cocktails that can rock your life indoors.

1. Ultimately

Our first drink on the list is a perfect quarantine drink for the simple reason that it is fresh and bursting with flavors that will probably remind you of your holidays on a beach and bring back the good feeling. At the same time, the ingredients in this drink are easily found and if not, you can make them too. This cocktail is sumptuous, well rounded, and with a zing of jalapenos, it leaves a tantalizing feeling on your taste buds. Here is how you can make it yourself.

Ingredients:

45 ml gin

45 ml of cucumber water

15 ml of lime juice

15 ml simple syrup

15 ml jalapeno simple syrup

Instructions :

  1. To make cucumber water, peel, and juice one medium-size cucumber.
If you do not have jalapeno syrup, you can add 5 jalapenos for every 450 ml of simple syrup.
  2. In a shaker, combine all the ingredients and shake.
  3. Pour in a coupe glass and your refreshing drink is ready.

2. Margarita with a Twist

Widely popular in America, we all love this classic drink that has a history of being mixed back in the 1930s. A margarita keeps us going on a boring day, the strong tequila with a pack of citrusy and salty flavors is so refreshingly good that it can wake our senses. Luckily we can create this cocktail in the comfort of our homes. With ingredients found in our kitchen cabinet and a twist of ginger, this recipe will win your heart.

You can create two variations in this drink:  ginger margarita and blood orange margarita by flipping one ingredient for another. Here is how to do it.

Ingredients:

  • 60 ml tequila of your choice
  • 30 ml fresh lime juice
  • 20 ml agave nectar
  • 30 ml fresh orange juice- for blood orange margarita
  • 15 ml fresh ginger juice – for the ginger twist

Instructions :

  1. Take the tequila of your choice, add agave nectar to it and stir till it completely dissolves, now slowly add fresh lime juice to it.
  2. Add either orange juice to make it a colorful and tangy blood orange margarita or go for an immunity-boosting ginger juice
  3. Moisten your glass rim by rubbing little lime juice and then evenly lining the rim with salt in a dish.
  4. Pour the drink carefully in the glass and serve with or without ice.

3. Peppermint Tea Collins

The beauty of this drink lies in the fact that it is refreshing and robust with flavors. You can make it with a variety of liquor. For a light taste, you can use vodka or gin, and if you want something more rustic and intense you may go for good old bourbon or even Irish whiskey.

Ingredients :

  • 2 lemon wedges
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 45 ml gin/vodka/Irish whiskey/bourbon
  • 10 tea bags, peppermint flavor.

Instructions :

  1. For the cold brew- Infuse peppermint tea bags in 4 cups of water and let it steep for four to twenty fours hours. Depending on the flavors you desire if the brew looks too dark, dilute with some honey and water.
  2. For the cocktail – In a tall glass, add one lemon wedge juice.
Then pour honey and liquor, and stir until the honey dissolves in the liquor.
Gradually add the cold brew to the glass and fill halfway.
Fill the rest of the glass with the ice.
Stir well and garnish with the lemon wedge and serve.

You can pretty much swap the ingredients of the drink, depending on what is available on your kitchen counter. If you do not have peppermint tea, you can go for hibiscus, chamomile or any other light herbal tea. Similarly, you can use simple syrup instead of honey.

4. Frozen Spritz

If you are missing a cool glass of refreshing and bubbly spritz, this recipe can come handily. A frozen spritz tastes summery and looks like color poured in the glass. With a bunch of fruit choices that are sitting in your refrigerator, you can put together a frozen version of your favorite drink. The frozen fruit in this drink makes it cold enough without watering it down.

Ingredients:

  • Frozen fruit – Strawberries/raspberries/blueberries/pineapple
  • 45 ml gin/vodka/unaged rum
  • Sparkling water
  • 2 lemon wedges
  • Pinch of salt
  • Ice

Instructions :

  1. Take a tall glass and fill it with equal amounts of ice and frozen fruit.
  2. Add a pinch of salt (trying to pinch as little as you can).
  3. Now juice a lemon wedge into the glass and your choice of liquor to it.
  4. Top it up with sparkling water, garnish with a lemon wedge and your fruit spritz is ready.

You can swap tonic for sparkling water if you are out of it.

5. Whiskey Sour

It is one of the best classic cocktails as it is also used as a base for many other cocktail recipes. The whiskey sour is a perfect balance of the tartness from the lemon and sweetness in the whiskey and simple syrup. With some easy ingredients, let us learn how to create this beauty at home.

Ingredients:

  • 60 ml bourbon/whiskey
  • 45 ml of lemon juice
  • 15 ml simple syrup
  • Garnish with cherry or lemon wedge.

Instructions :

  1. Add all the ingredients to a shaker and shake well.
  2. Pour on the rocks.
  3. Top it with a cherry or lemon wedge and serve.

Some classic recipes include adding egg white to the mixture to bring out the smoothness. However, an uncooked egg might have some health hazards, so you may not want to add that.

Mixing It Up:

These cocktails are quite simple to make. However, it might need some variation depending on how you bold you like your flavors to be. Why not try it, making it more than once to perfect what works best for you, after all, this quarantine gave us a little time to enjoy what we love.
