I am a big fan of Jay Nash. While I am trying to classify Jay Nash, I have to say it’s hard. He’s fluent in so many different musical styles: Americana, blues, contemporary music.. and my trying to classify him is fruitless because the music I listened to in 2009 or 2010 by Jay is still valid and it slips into becoming some of the tunes you will listen to often. I was a huge fan of Jay’s then and still am a big fan now. While he’s not able to tour as much as he used to in non-pandemic days, seeing him in Zoom concerts is really as meaningful as a club date, but the audience is significantly larger along with you provide your own drinks.
Here’s the latest from Jay Nash because he’s dropping his first single from a new album. I am sharing his newsletter about his newest album!
My new song, ‘And That’s Alright’ is now available worldwide on all music streaming and download platforms. It’s the first in a series of songs that I wrote right after my first child was born.
I hope that you will give it a listen and follow me on Spotify, if you are not already…–or the platform of your choice. (links below). To give you some incentive to do so and show you the kind of high-quality content that I am peddling over there, I made you a playlist of a bunch of music that I find great comfort in. It was fun…kind of like when I used to make mix-tapes in the early 90’s…but much, much easier. It’s called, “Cool Your Jets”. Check it out!
The original seed of inspiration for this song emerged over ten years ago, just days after the birth of my daughter. I was pulling the graveyard shift, trying to give my wife some rest and my daughter putting up a forceful resistance to the concept of sleep. In those days, my daughter would get very quiet and calm when I sang to her in a hushed tone while fingerpicking as quietly as I could on the 3/4 sized nylon string guitar that I found in Paris a few years earlier. (you know…the one that I wrote ‘Over You’ on…) As soon as I would stop singing and attempt to tiptoe out of the room, she would erupt into a full-throated scream. She had me well secured as her hostage, so I decided to make the best use of that time as I knew how.I recorded the guitar riff and the vocal refrain, ‘and it’s alright’ with my phone in the middle of the night as my infant daughter chattered in the background.
2010 was a busy year, so shortly after logging that voice memo, I forgot all about it. That year, in addition to welcoming our daughter into the world, we moved into our first house together in October and immediately began working around the clock to build out a home studio before heading out on the road almost continuously through Christmas.
When I rediscovered this song last year, I was in a deep phase of listening to Astral Weeks, by Van Morrison. That is a record that I can listen to over and over and never get sick of it. The arrangements are unlike any folk or rock record that has come before or after it. Just an incredible singer, surrounded by spectacular musicians, with everyone digging deep into the musical ether and making outside the box decisions.
So I recorded this spartan arrangement of ‘And That’s Alright’, late one evening, last winter. Everyone else in the house was asleep and I kept the lights off, listening for feedback from the ghosts that reside in this 220-year-old farmhouse.
I sent my favorite take to bassist, Jon Flower with my only instructions being to approach it with a real, ‘Astral Weeks vibe‘. He knew exactly what I meant, for Jonny is also a massive fan of that record. In my estimation, he nailed it on the first go.
So now, 10 years after the first seed of inspiration sprouted and over a year after recording this mellow little song, it seems like apt timing to let this one out into the world. I hope that the tone and sentiment of healing and reassurance work to soothe our rattled world, just as the song helped my daughter sleep on her most restless nights a decade ago.

Private Full-Length Concerts via Zoom or Facebook:
These have been such a blast! After countless hours of research and tweaking (along with continual improvements from the Zoom platform), I feel comfortable saying that the Zoom concert experience is truly ‘on the level’ now. Sound and video are both top-notch and it is such a blessing to be able to see and connect with an audience in a virtual setting.
The holiday calendar is starting to fill up, so please drop me (Jay Nash) a line or visit the online store if you are considering a virtual gathering for your friends, family, or business!
Nash is a multi-faceted, multi-talented person. He’s also part of the duo known as The Contenders with Josh Day. The music has a different vibe and brings out a style that I hadn’t seen in Jay. VERY interesting. The dynamic between Jay and Josh is quite meaningful.
