Two Women Launch a Woman-Owned Distillery and the Results are Fabulous: Freeland Spirits

Freeland Spirits is a great brand for spirits and also canned cocktails. Based in Oregon,  Freeland Spirits was founded by 2 women: Jill Kuehler and Molly Troupe.

Check out this video with Jill and Molly who talk about how the Freeland Spirits brand got started!

Freeland Spirits was founded by Jill Kuehler in 2017, and takes its name from Kuehler’s grandmother, a role model whom she called Meemaw, who (somewhat ironically) never touched a drop of alcohol, but taught Jill that women can be whatever they want to be.

Freeland Spirits has a grain-to-glass philosophy and creates superior spirits that celebrate all the Northwest has to offer. Partner and Master Distiller Molly Troupe is the youngest woman in America to earn a Masters Degree in Distillation from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland.

This company hires women and works with other women-owned businesses and suppliers!

Each month, Freeland celebrates female-identifying individuals who share their passion for busting through glass ceilings and challenging convention through its Free Spirits program.

The Freeland Spirits portfolio includes American craft Gin,  Genever-inspired Geneva, Dry Gin (Navy Strength), bourbon,  and canned cocktails including Gin and Rose Tonic  (all seen above) and French 75 (seen below with Gin & Rose Tonic).

Under $20: Freeland Canned Cocktails

Canned cocktails are a no-brainer gift. They’re easy to slip into a stocking or gift bag, and even easier to pop open when friends stop by for a front-stoop sip or a hallway happy hour.

Learn more about these cocktails in a can in this post: https://la-story.com/2020/10/freeland-spirits-and-freeland-canned-cocktails-are-ready-for-the-holidays/

  • Freeland’s Gin & Rose Tonic is a bright and refreshing cocktail that has a touch of the “Rose City” (Portland, Ore.) in every sip. $16.95 for 4 pack of 12-ounce cans

  • New Freeland French 75 cans, made in partnership with Chehalem Winery, add fizz and flair to any holiday moment (and are especially delicious for brunch moments). The combination of Freeland Gin, fresh Pacific Northwest botanicals, and Chehalem Chardonnay is carbonated for extra fun! $16/4 pack 12-ounce cans.

Under $40: Freeland Gin & Freeland Dry Gin

750 mL | 45% ABV | $35.95 SRP

Freeland Spirits Gin is small-batch, crafted using a unique blend of traditional heat distillation along with vacuum distillation, which lets  fresh Pacific Northwest ingredients shine through. Fresh herbal essences of rosemary, mint and crisp cucumber lift the nose, while grapefruit and lemon peel brighten the brisk juniper and bold spice notes. Pink peppercorn, coriander and star anise mingle with 10 additional dried botanicals in the copper pot still.

Freeland Dry Gin

New Freeland Dry Gin (Navy Strength!)

750 mL | 57% ABV | $35.95 SRP

Freeland Spirits Dry Gin is over-proof (114 proof) for overly delicious cocktails.  This London Dry-style dry gin that has it all – the signature gin botanicals backed up by juniper. As Freeland founder Jill Keuhler says, “Strong gals deserve a strong drink!” The aromatics are concentrated and bold, tickling the senses with hints of spice, citrus peel, and the ever-present juniper berry.

Under $50: Freeland Geneva and Freeland Bourbon Whiskey

Freeland Geneva

750 mL | 45% ABV | $43.95 SRP

Inspired by Genever, the Dutch “grandmother” of gin, Freeland’s Geneva showcases Oregon- grown rye with an array of sultry and savory botanicals. Its rich grain backbone is heightened by alluring spices and hints of Willamette Valley hazelnuts. Enjoy neat or stirred into a classic whiskey cocktail. Geneva is hand-crafted grain to glass in Portland, Oregon.

Freeland Bourbon Whiskey

750 mL | 46% ABV | $48.95 SRP

Freeland Bourbon pays homage to the South and to Freeland founder Jill Kuehler’s Grandma Freeland. Soft caramel, vanilla and spice dance into the whiskey from charred American oak barrels. A final rest in Oregon’s Elk Cove Winery Pinot Noir barrels adds a whisper of Pacific Northwest terroir.

Under $150: Spirit Trio

A gift pack of any three Freeland Spirits will make any cocktail lover’s eyes light up with joy, stirring visions of a winter’s worth of cocktail creations.

Here are two of our favorite trios:

Freeland Trio ($129 SRP) –
Freeland Dry Gin, Freeland Geneva, Freeland Bourbon Whiskey

For the person who likes a little bit of everything, get them the Freeland Trio. Enjoy these spirits in cocktails or on their own.

The Gin One! ($116 SRP) –
Freeland Gin, Dry Gin and Geneva.

This gin trio will excite the gin lover on your list. Freeland’s gins are handcrafted in Portland, Oregon, and are great on their own or in your favorite cocktail.

This brand is amazing!   Any of these spirits or canned cocktails would be amazing as a gift.

  1. May I simply say what a relief to find an individual who truly knows what they’re talking about on the web.
You certainly understand how to bring a problem to light and make it important.
More and more people should look at this and understand this side of your story.
I can’t believe you are not more popular because you most
    certainly have the gift.

  2. HI Homsk..
Thanks for the kind words on the post about the two women how launched Freeland Spirits.
Clarification: My side of the story isn’t MINE; it’s the story of Freeland Spirits. I am sure that they had obstacles that they had to overcome, but I know for a fact that this Oregon-based distillery is doing amazingly well with their canned cocktails and the variety of spirits that they make.
While I am good at telling (and illustrating) a story, when the business isn’t mine, I defer to the brand’s information so that I present the most accurate content.
