“The Reunion” Film Will Strike a Chord… and Have You Reliving Your Past!
There have been many movies about teenagers.. about them growing up and often the movies include the daily life of being in high school. For some, the memories are good … even great. For others, their high school days were less than stellar, and often walking down “Memory Lane” is far from pleasant. Personally, I am one of the latter. I was an adult when I was 15, and my focus was getting out of high school, getting my college degree, and being able to live life as that “adult”. I was a sensitive kid and I think others in my high school recognized that in me and welcomed any chance to harass me. Those high school memories brought up some childhood events where I was “the outsider”. For those who feel like an outsider or on the rim of a “group”, life can be and often is tricky.
When I was told about the movie ” The Reunion”, I thought initially it was going to be a movie that was more soda pop fizz than serious. Reading the synopsis will give you the essentials, but honestly, seeing the trailer is exceptionally meaningful.
The trailer for “The Reunion” will have you reliving your high school days and much more when you see this film. Initially, you might wonder about this film, but wait!!!!
Some of the early scenes will bring back memories of your younger /high school days. For some, those days were happy ones… for others, those days weren’t happy ones.
For many, high school days were exceptionally challenging. For some, navigating high school classes, making (and keeping) friends, and dealing with those who were less than friendly was a real obstacle course. Students who were on the “social fringe” often were left out of events and groups and were humiliated by those who felt they were so much better than the outsiders. Social insiders found that even the slightest contact with those who were outsiders to be socially repellant.
Rather than rambling on trying to ‘set the scene” for you in words, here’s the trailer,
This film was the baby of Dave Rosenberg. It’s about Dave, his friends (both male and female), and others who weren’t friends who felt that they were a step up from other students like Dave. Those in the “in-group” turned on Dave and one kid decided to make an example of him. It was an event/memory that Rosenberg never forgot. There are always situations in high school where someone tries to humiliate another student just because they can. I have experienced it.. and I am betting you did too.
Here’s how Dave Rosenberg explains how this all began:
Around 2003, I was eating lunch at Cosi Restaurant in Union Square, NYC, when I saw a guy who I had been traumatized by in my childhood. I told my two friends, Andrea Modica and Dinh Doan. Andrea said, “You have to confront this guy” and Dinh said, “You have to write about this”. I set about doing both. Andrea started “training” me through boxing and chess. I eventually confronted my Nemesis at a bar in downtown Manhattan. Meanwhile, for the next 5 years, Andrea, Dinh and I co-created the story of “The Reunion”. We would get together to brainstorm the story and improvise scenes, and then I would go off and write.

Rosenberg took those memories and worked with his friends from acting school and turned it into a writing project that turned into a script with his real-life friends playing themselves in the movie. This movie revolves around a high school reunion.. and how Dave uses the reunion to get back at the bully (or bullies) of high school— and how his friends help him to accomplish this feat. This movie is sure to bring back memories of all kinds.
SYNOPSIS:
Ricky Reilly, a former actor, is on a spiritual journey in Union Square Park, Manhattan with his Buddhist mentor, Danny. The high of his newfound spirituality is shattered when Ricky sees Travis, his childhood nemesis who put him in the hospital after a fight over a girl. When Ricky’s best friend Andy, an NYPD officer, returns from a trip overseas, he challenges Ricky to confront his nemesis at his upcoming high school reunion. The stakes are raised when Ricky falls in love with Natalie, a photographer who’s also mixed up in her own drama with an ex-boyfriend. And when Ricky spots Natalie with Travis, he sets off on a dark night of the soul towards THE REUNION, a dream-like event that has our main character searching for answers and testing his courage. Ricky will need everything he learned from his two friends and his newfound love interest to make it through his own personal Hero’s Journey. At a time when what it means to be a man is being challenged, “The Reunion” is a story of a “manchild”, forced to face his greatest fear, in order to discover a new definition of manhood.
