See The Eagles Live

With six No. 1 albums, five No. 1 singles and six Grammy Awards, the Eagles are one of the most successful groups from the ’70s. Rolling Stone ranked them No. 75 out of the 100 greatest artists of all time. This is unsurprising since they have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, and their albums Hotel California and The Greatest Hits (1971-1975) are some of the best-selling albums in the US, with both ranking in the top five. Of their seven studio albums, four have reached No. 1 in the US. In 1998, the Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001. The band continues to tour the world at major venues, playing all of their classic songs that have stood the test of time for nearly 50 years.

Eagles: They Were Once the “New Kid in Town”

The Eagles have quite a unique story about how they came together. Glenn Frey and Don Henley, who were both established musicians in their own right, were asked to play for Linda Ronstadt on her 1971 tour. As they played together, they decided they wanted to form a band of their own. When they told Ronstadt of their intention, she recommended Bernie Leadon to them, even arranging for him to play at her concert so that they could get to know him. They also brought Randy Meisner on board, with the foursome playing behind Ronstadt for a July concert that was held at Disneyland. In September of 1971, they were signed to Asylum Records as their own band. Since their inception, the Eagles have created classics such as “Brown Eyed Girl,” “Hotel California” and “New Kid in Town.”

Where did the name Eagles come from?

The Eagles started out as Teen King and the Emergencies. They changed their name to the Eagles after a trip to the Mojave Desert where they imbibed quite a bit of tequila and peyote. Beyond this, accounts of how the band name was picked vary, likely to the influences they were under. Felder says it was because he had read about the Hopi’s reverence for eagles, Souther says it came from Frey shouting “Eagles” when seeing eagles flying above them and a friend of the band, Steve Martin, claims he suggested the name.

What other bands are similar to the Eagles?
