There are only 4 days to watch this documentary created by the critically acclaimed
Brazilian LGBTQ+ Filmmaker Fernando Grostein Andrade, a
and his co-directors Fernando Siquiera and Claudia Calabi’s
Political Human Rights/Environmental Documentary:
BREAKING MYTHS!
This Film Exposes:
–BRAZILIAN PRESIDENT JAIR BOLSONARO’S CATASTROPHIC MASCULINITY,
–ANTI-LGBTQ RHETORIC,
–DEVASTATION OF AMAZON RAINFORESTS,
–HARM TO INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, AND MORE
–This film acquires new urgency because Bolsonaro forces a runoff against former President Lula on 10/30.
Critically acclaimed Brazilian and LGBTQ filmmaker Fernando Grostein Andrade (Breaking the Taboo,
Vagabond Heart, Abe) and his co-directors Fernando Siqueira and Claudia Calabi, released their human rights
documentary Breaking Myths worldwide online on September 16, 2022, in advance of the October 30th
presidential runoff election in Brazil.
The film is currently available to watch for free on YouTube.
The film aims to open the world’s eyes to the fragile and “catastrophic masculinity” of Brazil’s current
President Jair Bolsonaro, a fanatical far-right politician who can best be described as the Brazilian
Donald Trump, and survived the first round of elections to face former President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva (“Lula”) in a runoff election on October 30. Throughout the film, viewers learn
about Bolsonaro’s devastating policies towards the LGBTQ community, the environment,
women’s rights, and the country’s Black and indigenous peoples.
Breaking Myths exposes Bolsonaro’s anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and delves into his upbringing in the city of
Eldorado and his climb up the political ranks. The film also exposes his role in the deforestation of the
Amazon rainforest and its devastating consequences, and touches on the deaths of British journalist
Dom Phillips, who, along with Indigenous advocate Bruno Pereira, was killed whilst researching illegal
fishing in the Amazon rainforest in June 2021—a case that made headline news around the world.
Breaking Myths shows how Bolsonaro’s policies of dismissing protected indigenous land rights and
encouraging illegal logging and fishing have direct ties to their tragic murders.
Throughout the film, Breaking Myths draws a parallel between Andrade and Bolsonaro’s lives, alternating
both archival and new footage of the filmmaker and politician, plus interviews with Bolsonaro’s friends and
colleagues, both past and current, to try and understand why he is who he is, why he is the way he is, and
why the world should be nervous should he win a second term.
Andrade wrote and directed the feature alongside creative partner Fernando Siqueira and
co-director Claudia Calabi, and is the first release under Andrade’s production company FilmSoul Studios.
In making this film, the filmmakers and the team took many risks to shed light on the current situation in
Brazil, and to provide the world with an outlet for voices that have thus far been silenced. The film’s
co-director Claudia Calabi filmed many of the interviews in hard-to-reach and dangerous locations in the
outback of the Amazon rainforest.
Andrade is a renowned filmmaker who attracted the public’s attention in 2011 after the
success of his first documentary Breaking the Taboo, which featured seven prominent heads
of state, including Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, and spawned one of the largest human rights channels,
with over 21 million subscribers across various social media platforms. Later, when Andrade chose to
share his “coming out story ” live on YouTube in 2017, the story was picked up by media outlets and TV
networks all over Brazil, which elevated his public profile even further. With this additional reach, Andrade
became a target for Bolsonaro’s extremist fan base, and death threats ensued shortly after. Given the
increase in threats, Andrade felt he had no choice but to leave his home country.
“If you continue talking about politics, you’ll be buried in a sealed coffin,” read one of the threats against him.
“With privilege comes responsibility,” Andrade explains. In the film, he reveals his own story with
the purpose of being honest about where he comes from, encouraging and broadening the discussion
between LGBTQ+ community members and their families, and bringing together those that might have
opposing views. “Nurturing debate is crucial,” says Andrade, who was named a Young Global Leader
by the World Economic Forum in 2019 and was invited to participate in leadership programs at
Harvard and the University of Virginia.
The current release is strategic, as Andrade hopes the film will continue to contribute to
dialogue and bring attention to what is going on in his country, showing this is a global
problem that needs everyone’s support.
The film is available to watch it free on Youtube through October 30 (maybe longer!) at www.breakingmyths.com.
