California has serious drought issues. If you don’t know this, then I am telling you it’s true. We are on serious water cutbacks of at least 20% and in some areas/communities it’s up to 40% less. While we are typically known as the source for a lot of food products (produce, milk and other items), prices are climbing because of the drought’s impact on farming and other food producer segments. While we all wonder when the drought will end, we have to learn to live with a water-conservation mind. So growing our own produce and doing it with minimal water makes perfect sense. It also makes a perfect gift for Father’s Day, weddings and other special events like anniversaries.
While the above idea of being water-smart and growing our own food sounds good, how does one do that? It’s not that easy here in the urban areas of California when property prices are pretty high. We tend to max out square footage for personal residences. What’s someone to do?
Turn to LA Urban Farms for the answer! These ingeniously-designed vertical aeroponic gardens, help you create your own personal organic food source with less effort and without getting your hands dirty, and use 90% less water to grow it. Hopefully it gets your attention!
These self-contained farms require just a tenth of the land mass, use no soil or harmful chemicals and grow faster yields than traditional soil gardens. Crops including greens, herbs, watermelons, strawberries, tomatoes, eggplant, edible flowers and hundreds of others, are harvested with the roots intact (see rainbow chard at right) so they are still alive when they hit your plate, making them more flavorful and nutrient dense.
Check out the “urban farms” with Chef Jessica Coleman!
“This technology is so easy to use, we can all be farmers,” said LA Urban Farms Co-Founder Wendy Coleman “In just 30 inches, you can grow up to 44 different plants in abundance in what might have been unused space. Most of the produce grown in these aeroponic gardens can be harvested in just 28 days.”
Chef Helen Cavallo inspects the plants!
These gardens are the ‘IT” thing in Hollywood because they represent a commitment to local food-growing and an organic lifestyle. Stanford University, Santa Barbara City College, Google Cafeteria, Chicago O’Hare Airport(shown in video above) and Giants Stadium are now growing food with this technology. Sunset Gower Studios’ commissary recently re-opened as Food & Bounty helmed by Disney’s “That’s Fresh” TV Chef and Caterer Helen Cavallo. LA Urban Farms is growing 880 edible plants in 20 gardens for Chef Cavallo just steps from her kitchen door.
How it works:
A reservoir at the base of each garden holds 20 gallons of water infused with a nutrient solution formulated for optimal plant health and human nutrition. A submersible pump pushes the water up through the center of the column where it is accessed by the plants’ hanging roots. As it trickles back down, it mists the roots with nutrient-rich water. The same water recirculates until the plants absorb it.
Tim Blank, Inventor
This patented growing system was designed by inventor Tim Blank who worked with NASA and Disney’s Epcot Center’s “Living with the Land” exhibit as lead horticultural expert for 12 years, growing hydroponic food crops from all over the world. His system is so innovative and sustainable that it has been approved by the Clinton Global Initiative and the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED points.
Price: $525 or 12 monthly payments of just $45.25 per month (plus tax and shipping).
Add-On: An extension kit can be purchased for $70 that allows you to grow 8 additional plants for a total of 28 plants.
These gardens make great gifts and great investments for those with minimal space and the desire to grow some of their own food. It makes it much simpler with faster results with this aeroponics device. It’s smart, it’s almost “Hollywood sexy” and it’s going the distance to improve the quality of life for many while conserving water. While it’s a bit of a dent in the credit card, it will provide a lot of bonuses in terms of not just growing veggies, herbs but also edible flowers and helping to balance the greenhouse effect.

I do love these systems. They would be more efficient in CA because you have some moisture in the air, but could work here if you placed them in some shade.
