Put a Little Effort into Tasty Labor Day Cocktails!

Author It’s a holiday- and it’s the end of “summer” except we all know (at least here in California) we could have summer for another 2 months.
But for those of you who are already looking at weather changes, I want to give you some fun things to indulge in for cocktails. I know that I tossed you a couple of cocktails yesterday but I gave you a ton of great treats to make as well. So make sure you did make something or create a riff off those items and start ordering those specific items because they will reappear back in the blog in fall posts about cocktails, food and treats.

Making certain kinds of cocktails, desserts and treats can be difficult if you can’t find the right ingredients. I used to have both a black coconut salt and a pink Hawaiian salt and both went “poof” -gone- and there went my unique and very tasty way of working with meat, fish, fresh veggies and lots more. So finding exactly the right ingredients is pretty crucial. Here in Southern California, you might have to drive some distance or purchase a chunk of something that you might not use quickly unless you can split the batch of whatever it is with someone else who is equally enamoured.

Drive up Pine Avenue from Ocean Blvd and look at all the vintaage buildings, particularly after you cross First Street. Pine is rife with great restaurants and it’s spreading across to the East Village. What you might not notice is this demure building set back from the street a bit– quite large actually. It was once a bank that close and then morphed into a high-end eatery called Madison. Madison soon died due to very pricey (but yummy) food but the space was quite large. It was huge, gorgeously art deo/vintage in feel and yet cold.
Fast forward several years and voila- a new spot within the former bank called thoughtfully THE FEDERAL BAR — a sister store to the one in NoHo. (North Hollywood for visitors). This is one fine building. The huge space that dwarfed Madison and it’s diners has been morphed into several spaces without losing the best part of the visual — the ceilings, the space and what they did to carve up the space created group areas, lounges and they are even taking over the vault to turn it into something special.
