On the DVD Trail: Get Past the Writers Strike wth NEW DVD Releases

Given that there is a lot (or maybe only a little ) riding (and writing) on the WGA strike (read Writers Guild of America) , now might be a good time to do some investing in some new DVD’s recently released for your own use as well as gifting!
There are many out there so let’s take a look at what’s new and different.
On the television front, there are a number of series that have recently dropped season collections!

NCIS Fourth Season
The fourth season of NCIS is barely over and it rolls out on DVD faster than pancakes off the griddle but if you missed a few episodes or the interesting twists of the relationship between the Director ( Lauren Holly) and Special Agent Gibbs (aka Leroy Jethro Gibbs aka cutie Mark Harmon) mixed in with a bit of sly humor from Tony Dinoso ( Michael Weatherly) makes for some interesting plot points. Don’t forget Abbey’s amazing computer skills and her humor as played off against agent “probie” and now author Tim McGee quirky and layered personality and Zia, the Israeli agent assigned to NCIS whose tactical skills are as amazing as her metaphorical language mistakes. Ducky (David McCallum) is under-used and well played and the other supporting players are terrific as they provide a well rounded team. It’s a great series and one that I watch regularly– though after a while you do know how it’s going to end. I wish they would mix it up a bit more– but when you are looking at the entire series back to back, you see how seamless the actors are and how the talent blends so well with each other . And the guys are just so darn cute, that it’s worth owning!

CSI: Miami Season Five

CSI: Miami– the steamier version of the CSI series on tv — lead by Horatio Caine (David Caruso) and his state-of-the-art forensics team as they investigate tropically hot and sexy Miami crimes that hit nightclubs, suburbs and uncover family secrets and lots more. The CSI: Miami Season 5 Complete DVD Collection features 24 episodes of riveting and shocking mysteries What’s really interesting is that while the truly long shots of the series are of Miami, the series is shot in Los Angeles and the crew does an excellent job doing tight shots and setting up the scenes so that they actually LOOK like Miami — from the costumes, actor’s accents, to the locations. You would never know it’s Southern California– but it’s a game locals play to recognize exactly where it’s shot because it’s shot in several of the same places over and over. (how do I know? I live where they shoot, plus I met Eva La Rue at an Emmy event)
Of all the CSI Series, this one is truly my favorite because the characters are so real and they are so well acted. The tricks that they use to keep you on the edge and the plot twists with the characters keep the series interesting.
Plus on the Season Five set, there’s a bonus PC video game demo included!!

Home Improvement: Seventh Season

For all of you who remember the pratfalls and the hilarious comedy that made Home Improvement one of the top 10 shows each and every week, this collection of 25 episodes will have you practically rolling on the floor. It’s been a while since this show has been released and having the entire season of on DVD is one big belly laugh, it’s a good time for the entire family — something that’s not often found these days. Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson are back as couple with the most arguments because Tim is typically a man’s man and somewhat clueless about what communication with the opposite sex means. Just the thought of Richardson playing off not one but typically 4-5 men (including Al, as Tim’s Tool Time assistant who knows how to really get the job done) is one that should be for the record books. Dan Ackroyd and Grant Hill are guest starts in this season as well as many others. I can’t tell you how funny this is, because for me, it’s just a hoot to remember that my little 2 year old daughter loved watching this with her dad and they would both do that growl and hoot that is typically Tool Time/Home Improvement!
