[my] Style Files Sleuths Out the *Best* Mascaras on Counters– Part 3!!

On the quest to find the perfect mascara (or driven to develop her own), Catherine Horgan set out to uncover just which brands and formulas performed best – on both top and bottom lashes. Not only was Catherine pleasantly surprised with the results, she can now cross “Create The Best Mascara” off of her list.
This is part 3 of this kick-a$$ mascara report. She went above and beyond (to the last lash)
The Participants
A big thank you goes out to the publicists who participated in the Mascara Roundup. The mascaras included were supplied by publicists or funded by [my] style files. , The Mascara Report provides a wide variety of mascaras based on a number of consumer requirements.
Note: all waterproof mascaras and layering-effect mascaras sent in were not included in this report for consistency reasons. Look for them in upcoming monthly reviews on [my] style files.
The Playing Field
All mascaras were tested on top and bottom lashes with no make-up (eyeliner or eye shadow) underneath bottom lashes. Two coats were applied to top lashes, unless otherwise noted. No eye cream was applied during testing period. Mascaras were tested for all day wear and into the evening.
The report is provided in an easy-to-read format, giving honest opinions – with no marketing spin. A guide is provided below to help quickly steer you toward the results you seek.

Volumizing and Conditioning Formula in 
Black
Nice coverage on lashes and created some volume. Easy to apply on bottom lashes – with no smudging, smearing or flaking.

Water-Resistant Formula in Black
Due to the fact this formula is not waterproof, it was included. This mascara is very easy to apply and really lengthens lashes. No smudging, smearing or flaking. Washes off with ease.

Lavera BOT, D
Volume Mascara in Black
This is an organic mascara that is also paraben-free and heavy-metal-free. Rich color, though smudged easily and tends to weigh down lashes. Messy under bottom lashes.

Great Lash in Blackest Black
Rich color. Lengthens nicely. Smears under bottom lashes as well as leaving dust before mid-day.

Motives L, D
Tubular Mascara in Black and Lash 
Longer
The Tubular Mascara was light and easy to apply multiple layers. No visible flakes, smudges or smears. Better on its own than with Lash Longer underneath. The concept of Lash Longer is great – lengthening lashes by adding fibers before applying mascara – though, it’s a bit messy to use.

Noir V, L
Lash Lust in Black Out
This mascara both lengthens and adds volume. Looks great and stays put all day. Nice inky black color for day or evening. This formula provided absolutely no flaking, smudging or smearing.

N.Y.C. New York Color L, BOT
Defining Mascara in Black
Lifts and separates lashes. Easy to apply. Smudges and smears terribly under bottom lashes.

Volumizing Mascara in Black
This mascara thickens nicely in a feathery kind of way. Very natural looking. Easy to apply to bottom lashes.

Prescriptives L
Beyond Long Maximum Length in Black
Creates really soft lashes at great lengths. Doesn’t separate lashes like many lengthening mascaras tend to do. It’s easy to apply and super for layering.
