Celebrity Style Slam comes back with a real twist to the attitude and presentation. NY-based writer Nancy Lichtenstein who covers NYFW for me joins me in evaluating the fashion content seen on the red carpet. While we talk about the fashion winners and losers, you can weigh in with comments about our perspective.
We started with the Golden Globes and will also run into the SAG Awards and maybe even Art of Elysium.
Nancy’s comments are bolded, mine are not- just so you are clear on who’s talking.
Celebrity Style Slam: Carrie Ann Inaba and Zoe Saldana.
Zoe Saldana
Color
NL:
I loved this rich, deep jewel tone. It presents enough contrast with her gorgeous skin and stands out in a sea of greige.
SW: Loved the color too but the busy patter at the bottom took the eye awar from Zoe’s lovely face and ptu it at her hemline. — not so great idea here.
Shape
NL:
Apart from the fact that the bodice of the dress appears to have a bit too much fabric–see the rippling?– Zoe Saldana has a perfect figure and can easily pull off a dramatic shape like this that would overwhelm many women.
SW: Dramatic ball gown and with a serious almost flamenco-like attitude. Love the basic dress and it fits her perfectly– except I think the tiers are a bit much and dwarf her just a touch.
Style
NL:
I’m not a huge fan of ruffles, and this many ruffles and bows on a skirt like that could look too Little Bow Peep. But the echo of flamenco works well with her Latina heritage and background as a dancer…I’m going to have to go out on a limb here and say that while not many women would have been able to wear this gown successfully, it looks great on her, and I give her credit for taking a risk and being willing to stand out.
SW: . It’s the tiers of ruffles and the color pattern that disturb me and keep me from looking at her face– and not the hemline. It’s over the top on the ruffles and I wish there were less of them or at least in a solid color. Maybe less overall with a bit of beading or other embellishment would have been better.
Hair/Makeup/Accessories
NL:
Love her hair…very 40’s movie star, perfect for the shape of her face, stylish but not fussy. I thought her makeup was well done too- she’s got a nice glow on.
SW: Great hairstyle. Very glam, very Hollywood and very perfect for this occasion and the dress. Make-up was glam too but not overwhelming. She looked amazing.
Accessories is the only place she’s falling down here. I know the dress is a lot of look, but I’d still like to see something around her neck.- it begs for more in the chest area.
SW: Accessories– so lacking in that.
Overall Rating: Four and a half stars.
Golden Globe Awards: Carrie Ann Inaba/Zoe Saldana
Carrie Ann Inaba
ColorNL:
Weird trend going on at the Golden Globes tonight–patterns reminiscent of floor tiling? Pink and black marble is the height of fashion when it comes to a hotel powder room; on an evening gown? Not so much.
SW: Given Carrie Ann Inaba’s unusual and exotic coloring, I think is color and dress was a match made in heaven. Yes it’s a print, it’s a bit on the wild side– but then again so is Inaba. She’s gutsy, gorgeous and she has the body to pull this off as well as the confidence. Loved it!!
Shape
NL:
Her torso is too short for this particular halter; it looks like a racing bathing suit and makes her shoulders look overly broad. The seam or color contrast, I’m not sure what it is, between the top and bottom makes her waist look thick, and the tight skirt calls so much attention to her butt that I can only assume it’s intentional, and she’s planning on making her entrance backwards.
I do like the bare back of the bodice, however; on a solid-colored dress that was more figure-flattering, it would have been great.
SW: I think the dress looks amazing on her. She has broad shoulders because she is a dancer. You want to highlight her well defined shoulders and arms. I think the top half of the dress is amazing and draws your eyes straight up to her face. The bottom half– while it’s darker and a bit more contrasting that I would have liked, it does work and it de-emphasizes her hips and makes her look super-curvy and delicious. I think the print on the bottom could have been smaller to not make so much of hips but still the dress looks amazing on her.
Style
I’m hard pressed to identify a style with this look. It kind of looks like a snake and a mermaid mated, and while it MIGHT have worked on a much taller person, it’s kind of lacking
in taste.
SW: The style is Hollywood Glamour pushed beyond the traditional envelope. While Kate Hudson did it in white and seemed to falter, I think that Inaba (and stylist Jen Rade) did an amazing job at working a dress that would have swallowed most people whole — and made it entirely her own. She’s got that dress confidence to work it to the max. I think she loos like Harlow only better.
Hair/Makeup/Accessories
Boy, the hair and makeup at the Golden Globes was a snooze this year. There’s nothing really wrong with this, but there’s certainly nothing that’s enhancing her considerable beauty, and the simple ponytail just adds to the lifeguard feel I’m getting. As for accessories, the rings and earrings aren’t really noticeable and a long necklace with that deep V neck might have done more to draw the eye up and down and make her look taller.
SW: I think the make-up was in key with the dress color and Inaba’s unusual coloring. She can’t wear most of the colors out there — the cool pinks and pastels without washing her out. She went more neutral– though I would have liked to see her more feral and ferocious. A warmer lip color would have been awesome.
The jewelry she wore was amazing. Carrie Ann Inaba of Dancing with the Stars wore gorgeous jewelry from Le Vian. She is wearing Le Vian chocolate diamond ball earrings and a Le Vian chocolate diamond ring. Do I wish she had worn a necklace– a longer, layered, more intricate necklace of vari-colored gems– yes I do. But overall she did a grea job.
Overall Rating: Two stars
Here’s where Nancy and I differ. I would easily have given Inaba 3.5 stars at least.
Winner: Zoe Saldana–and I scored it BEFORE I found out she’s a fellow Jersey girl.
Thank you to Nancy Lichtenstein for her spot-on, incisive commentary. It’s really interesting because she’s on the East Coast and I am on the West Coast and yet we come up with similar conclusiions. (PS. I don’t see her writing until she’s finished the review).
