Not particularly easy trying to decide which sunblocks to use and how often to use them.
It’s key to wear sunblock every day regardless of weather. Even during rain, you can get UVA exposure! The wake-up call for me came about 12 years ago when my “devlil may care” sun exposure on the beach showed up on my face as pre-cancerous spots. EEEK. Those came off but left their traces on my face which weren’t pleasant. However having been free of anything truly cancerous, I got lazy. While I applied sunblock to my face religiously, I didn’t do that to the rest of me.
Lo and behold the cancer struck on my shin of all places. I mean who puts sunblock on your shins when you are wearing jeans most of the time? But it came back as squamous cell carcinoma-thankfully caught very early due to my eagle-eye perusal of my bod.
So here’s the word: apply sunscreen on your legs, arms, shoulders, ears (10% of all skin cancers are on ears!) top of your feet and between your toes. (really!)
Choose good sunblocks and make sure you get a couple of them– and just because it has a high SPF doesn’t mean a 1x day application. You have to apply through the day particularly when you are getting exposure during the summertime.
Here’s a video that features a curated collection of sunblocks that I have found to be really smart choices. Plus I have a few other favorites listed after the video with a bit more about them.
