Tequila is one of my favorite spirits. It’s got flavor and different ways of presenting– if you are willing to be creative. Sometimes it’s merely the shape of the glass and voila’ — instant amazing drink.
Because of Halloween, we are starting early (don’t you just love that?) We like witches brew as much as anyone else but this cocktail has a bit of a bite and will leave you thirsting for more. Think “Twiilight” meets “True Blood” plus a twisted sense of humor and we are all good on this one. This one really appeals to me for all the right reasons. The tastes are luscious. The name is provocative and the presentation is killer. (pun intended)
CORZO Bite
1 1/2 parts Corzo Silver Tequila
1/2 parts Campari
1 part fresh blood orange juice
1/4 parts blood (aka home-made grenadine) **
2 parts Jarritos Tamarindo Soda
Process: Build all ingredients into a highball glass filled with ice. Add the “blood” at the end.
Garnish: blood orange wheel and strawberry syrup
** Home-made grenadine: Add equal parts white sugar and POM pomegranate juice together and dissolve sugar over high on stove-top. When dissolved, add several drops of orange flower water, simmer on low heat for 10 mins., chill, and serve.
** If blood oranges are not available, use a slice of regular orange that is soaking in “blood” as a garnish.
Not every tequila will work for this drink– I like Corzo for the smoothness and the agave flavor and this makes for a bit of the bite that is essential for that TRUE BLOOD & Halloween effect.

Pogash began his bar consulting career, aiding the Trummers in promoting Navan, a vanilla-infused cognac from the house of Grand Marnier. Later Jonathan had a short stint at chef David Bouley’s (of Bouley and Danube) new venture, Upstairs @ Bouley, where he joined Stefan Trummer behind the bar. This is when Jonathan also helped open Solo, on Madison Ave., where he was a bartender and cocktail consultant.
