Lauren Lipton is a well-known author and writer.
Her writing credentials are impeccable (WSJ, InStyle, New York Times, ForbesWoman and a slew other magazines) and she’s written two novels and working on a third (fans waiting with bated breath for this one). I have known Lauren for a good chunk of time: several years and we have met up whenever I can get into NYC and sometimes when she gets to the left coast. You can find podcasts with her on this blog about her books. podcast 1, podcast 2. (I know there was another article somewhere but I can’t find it!)
Given that Lauren and I are writers/reporters, we have had many discussions lamenting the situation for writers– particularly freelance writers. Those who have jobs often are grossly underpaid unless they are working for a really well-established magazine in a specific sector or happen to be a name-brand editor. Fees that we used to get 5-7 years ago have shrunk dramatically and the advent of online writing– something in which I participated (happily creating several innovations of online content, videos and events) changed the landscape for writers dramatically. (Little did I know that I was creating the demise of my own print value.) Add in the citizen journalism (i.e., blogs), podcasts and videos and you have even more changes that dilute the value of quality writers who actually know how to spell, do research, source photos, and provide a thoughtful presentation.
In light of that, Lipton has taken this a step further and created a video about
it. This is part 1 so I am gleefully hoping that there will be many more segments.
Thank you to Lauren Lipton for putting this out there. You might believe that she has exaggerated the situation- but unfortunately not. This is the way life is– except for the deadline. Sometimes they want the story yesterday.
** sorry about the formatting. I was trying to correct the word “job” which actually is JOBS on my back end version but WP keeps cutting it off. Sigh.
