I like food as much as the next person. Some things (like chocolate) more than others (meat loaf– not so much). However thanks to 185 Chocolat’s Heidi Ash who posted a link on Twitter, here is the month of February’s FOOD holidays. Go figure– some last all month long.
If you know me well enough, you know I am spot-on with wine and cocktails and even non-alcoholic beverages but not so much with food. I do cover food but I have to have something interesting to “bring to the table”– pun intended. So you will appreciate my commentary on these various days of FEB Food Holidays.
Berry Fresh Month (so chocolate covered berries count? I can’t imagine FRESH berries available in Feb. can you?)
Canned Food Month — Canned food isn’t my favorite but there are fruits and some veggies I like. How about caramel, coffee or chocolate (as in great dark chocolate) syrup over some of this stuff. OR make a mole’ which is a Mexican sauce made with unsweetened chocolate.)
Celebration of Chocolate Month — Perfect month don’t you think?
Great American Pies Month I like pie– just it has to be a great pie. It doesn’t have to be chocolate I don’t like cream pies but particular flavors of pies I like.
National Cherry Month Love cherries– but who can find them fresh? Just grab a bag of frozen cherries and some chocolate or caramel or bread pudding and a good whiskey sauce. (see there’s something good in this one)
National Fiber Focus Month –brownies with Fiber One? Chocolate covered carrots?
National Hot Breakfast Month French toast stuffed with marscapone and topped with berries or cherries and a brandy sauce sounds good to me.
National Grapefruit Month Can I have it with some Dolce Touch Vodka, Dobel or Corzo Tequila or to make it stranger– how about Cruzan rum?
National Snack Food Month — does chocolate count?
Potato Lover’s Month – for the carb-lover, bring on the bacon (the good stuff) and also some chives and really great Stilton cheese
Sweet Potato Month split in half, baked with nutmeg, maple syrup and cinnamon. Or cut in slices and bake them like chips.
Shape Up With Pickles Time First Week -Fried please. That’s the best way for pickles.
Great American Pizza Bake Second Week— Barbara Hyman’s Cordon Bleu Pizza recipe for Papa John’s contest would work here. It was awesome.
Jell-O® Week Second Week — JELLO?????? How about Jello shots!
Kraut and Frankfurter Week Second Week — Ok. hmm make it a bratwurst, skip the saurkraut and add in sweet potato fries. This is obviously NOT my week.
National Pancake Week Fourth Week Open season on fruit topping, caramel syrup with a bit of whiskey or rum added in.
Food Checkout Week Fourth Week – what does this mean? I have no clue
International Pancake Day Shrove Tuesday (February or March) See pancake week above- do it twice.
Oatmeal Monday Second Monday top with berries, chopped nuts, goji berries and don’t forget a drizzle of caramel or maple syrup
National Baked Alaska Day February 1 — that pretty much says it all (unless “global warming” occurs and suddenly Sarah Palin’s backyard becomes the latest hot spot.
Heavenly Hash Day February 2 -either this is a candy or it’s a new way of using medicinal marijuana. I can’t wrap my brain around this one.
Crepes Day (France) February 2 –ohlala!! Let’s have it with brandy sauce or chocolate or both!
National Carrot Cake Day February 3 A new way to get your veggies!
Homemade Soup Day February 4 — well anyone want to make the soup? I would take Hot & Sour from Me Soo Hungry!!
National Stuffed Mushroom Day February 4 — Stuff it with seafood or chopped veggies or a cheese something and count me in.
National Chocolate Fondue Day February 5 – do you really need a comment? Add fruit of various colors and have your RDA of fruits.
Nutella Day February 6 — mix this with the crepese.
National Fettucini Alfredo Day February 7 – add some broccoli, peas, prosciutto or great bacon and I am set.
Molasses Bar Day February 8 -What is a molasses bar? Can we add nuts or chocolate or dried fruit to it?
National Bagels and Lox Day February 9- I know they have some great bagels out there but I don’t do lox. The more for the rest of you.
Pizza Pie Day February 9 –See recommendation for the Cordon Bleu Pizza from Barbara Hyman
Cream Cheese Brownie Day February 10– Just add a bourbon sauce and we are all good.
Peppermint Patty Day February 11 — Works for me..
National Plum Pudding Day February 12 – Shouldn’t this be in December?
National Tortellini Day February 13 – Love it. Bring it on and don’t forget to add veggies to the sauce
National Creme-Filled Chocolates Day February 14 – Creme filled chocolates? How about ganache from 185 Chocolat, Richart or the other great one?
National Gumdrop Day February 15 — Find your favorite flavor- mine is with vodka or gin.
National Almond Day February 16 — Make mine toasted and add chocolate and coconut.
National Indian Pudding Day February 17– history buffs, I need some help here.
National Café Au Lait Day February 17 – double shot please and keep them coming.
National Cabbage Day February 17 -cole slaw is good.
Crab-Stuffed Flounder Day February 18 – Heavy on the crab please!
Drink Wine Day February 18 – You don’t have to ask me twice. I like Anyellas from Skaneateles (bring me anything) and also a Malbec would be lovely
National Chocolate Mint Day February 19 –wasn’t this covered earlier? We could make this a cocktail. I bet David Brogan has a great recipe!!
National Margarita Day February 20 — Skip the salt and let’s do them up right.
National Sticky Bun Day February 21 –add in lots of dried fruit, maybe tiny bits of chocolate and lots of pecans and I would be thrilled.
National Cherry Pie Day February 22 — We know why– right?
National Banana Bread Day February 23 – Banana Bread day? Let’s make this a cocktail if possible or a dip for chocolate fondue– or the sub for cracker in smores
Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day February 23 – My dog will love me, but I am not touching these
National Tortilla Chip Day February 24 – Chicken Tortilla Soup please!
National Clam Chowder Day February 25 –Great wine, soup and crusty bread!
National Chocolate-Covered Nuts Day February 25 – 2 food groups- gotta love it!
National Pistachio Day February 26 – This is a winner. These taste great in good chocolate or make a nice “rim” when crushed for a cocktail.
National Chili Day February 26 – Let’s have some fun– what can we toss in this besides beer or tequila?
National Strawberry Day February 27 there are no ripe strawberries.. so chocolate dipped would be good or dried and mixed into a bread pudding or add into the banana bread day
National Kahlua Day February 27 – double shot cappucino and Kahlua please
National Chocolate Souffle Day February 28 – As long as someone else cooks it, I am thrilled.
Surf and Turf Day February 29 [Leap Day] – I like the concept, I cannot eat that much food.
So that’s February. I might or might not post March when it comes rolling around. St Patricks day is mid-month and that will be green and crazy. I don’t like green chocolates personally unless they are M&Ms. Now if you have any more suggestions, please post them here or on my facebook page.
