“Fast Five”: Gives New Meaning to the Words “Rev Your Motor”

Stole some time to hit the movie theater this weekend. There was lots to see but I chose to see some “mind candy” (and maybe a little eye candy too in terms of cars and men). I am a huge fan of action flicks and I have seen every edition of “Fast and Furious” since it came out. I love fast cars. My friends know that. This movie series appeals to that inner “automotive bad ass driver” in me. Fast Five does NOT disappoint when it comes to driving, stunts, and even plot. With a riff to the original 2 movies and a nod to Tokyo Drift . This is not the washed out or faded sequels that were seen in #3 and #4. This one is strong and fast with tight editing, great stunts, a better plot line than in the previous two movies and could essentially tie up the series.

Vin Diesel shows off a lot of depth. Paul Walker still has great blue eyes. The three lead women are amazing and the rest of the cast play it strong in their roles. Dwayne (aka THE ROCK) Johnson plays a serious, “takes no crap from the bad guys” super-FBI agent. Joaquim de Almeida plays the “bad guy” so well that he’s played in so many other movies & TV shows (Clear & Present Danger, 24, La Femme Nikita and many other roles). This movie starts off in one direction and keeps on shifting gears and changing lanes as this plot has many twists and turns.

What I loved about this movie is how creative they got with it– keeping the action in fifth gear but also showing you what’s going on with the characters and fleshing them out a bit more, giving the characters more depth. While Mia’s character is a little on the thin side, the other two female characters are solid — and provide some real counterpoint to the men so it’s not all testosterone driven. The trailers featured here give you cuts of the movie out of sequence – and that’s good! Keep you on your toes. I will tell you that the end of the second trailer is the tip of the iceberg of the big stunts in this movie– but it leaves you hanging by your fingertips. Just know that there’s more like that to come and it’s going to come at you “fast and furious” with some of the best action sequences I have seen this year and part of last. There’s very little “down” time in this movie and it’s wisely used to set up plot and characters and keep the tension going.

If you like actiion flicks, check out this one. I know it sounds silly– but it’s worth the money.
