“My Sister Is a Pop Star” Book Series for Tweens & Teens: Podcast #1 with Author Dr. Kimberly Greene!

When it comes to buying for tweens and teens, it’s treacherous road on what’s hot and what’s not. What’s even more interesting is what that demographic often considers to be hot (cool, rad, down, right on etc) can vary from day to day. What’s entirely interesting is that for the most part while the book genres that appeal to the tween and teen segments are often fantasy-driven (Harry Potter, Twilight etc), here’s a series that’s based on the threads of real life — as seen by author Dr. Kimberly Greene.

This is part 1 of the interview with Dr. Kimberly Greene, the author of a series of books targeted quite accurately at the tween & teen reader market. Greene’s series of “My Sister Is a Pop Star” gives reality TV a big twist and brings the story right back with a reality check that makes it clearly different from those scripted TV shows that girls & guys “buy into” so often.

Who is Dr. Kimberly Greene?

Triple threat Greene, who was already an established performer, entrepreneur and college professor when she embarked on a writing career, set out on a mission to further her message through tween books. She now boasts the internationally successful Pop Star book series that includes My Sister’s a Pop Star, The Fame Game and Me, and My Life on TV. The quirky and humorous stories follow a young girl named Sam whose life is thrust into the spotlight when her older sister becomes a celebrity. Originally released in Europe and met with great praise, the series has recently made its debut in the United States.

Dr. Greene has effectively created age-appropriate media that both entertains and engages tweens, without pushing them to grow up too fast. All of her writing is based upon something that kids can relate to and encourages them to think about their own choices, likes, dislikes, ideas, and actions. She switches from first person to third person narrative throughout the books so that her readers will create their own understanding of what is being described. She also incorporates some of her own life experiences to make the stories more relatable

Here’s a podcast– part 1– with Dr. Kimberly Greene as we talk about her books and how this series came about.

It was done in late summer and yes I know it’s late. My apologies to Dr. Greene but I actually read these books and wanted to be able to telo you they are spot on. Not that they wouldn’t be because Dr. Greene is extremely smart, savvy and knows her audience well.

Greene has created real life characters that are authentic both to adults and to the tween/teenage audience. This is the real deal she’s portraying and it’s reaching kids in a way that they “get” and are also getting the “message” that’s underlying the story. As an educator both on-set and off for celebrity kids as well as those in public schools, she has found a niche and a point to be made to this particular generation about what life is really like apart from the reality series that purport to show life in the celebrity fast lane but one in which we know is entirely scripted.

Thank you to Dr. Kimberly Greene for her time and her fabulous books. These are books that can be given for any occasion. Buy them all and hand them out as needed. Give them to an English teacher or a librarian and see what they can do with them. It’s a worthy effort!!
