Here are some hot (or not so much) films on DVD that are worth putting on your streaming or DVD list from Netflix.
Got kids? Check out Disney’s Brave! This ode to the strength, character and equality of girls should balance out against some of the previous milder Disney heroines. This one at least knows what she wants and works to get it.
For those who love Shakespeare: CORIOLANUS will do the trick. This is a little-known Shakespeare play translated into contemperary visuals but with classic verbiage. Not into Shakespeare or these sort of updates- this might be not so great.
From Disney, John Carter failed miserably at the box office — mostly due to incorrect marketing approach. This isn’t perfect but there are worse movies that I have seen that did more at the box office than John Carter. This is at least a family film!
WAR HORSE : Spielberg’s Oscar nominated film from the children’s book- worth the watch and perfect for kids but it’s a bit too long IMHO.
Take another war story with a jump ahead in time to WW2 and see REDTAILS by George Lucas. Why this didn’t fly in the theater beats me. (pun intended) GREAT film, actors, meaningful, fits into the themes of Django and all that and it works! It’s awesome!
A DANGEROUS METHOD starring Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender (SHAME) is about Freud, Jung and a very crazy young woman who is tortured but beautiful. I guess they had no professional ethics because Jung sleeps with the patient at times and it’s definitely a tale that you have to be willing to go down a very warped road. NOT FOR KIDS!
In Theaters:
Haven’t seen THE HOBBIT? Worth the $$ to see it-3D or not doesn’t make any difference to me. However if you want the full thrill ride effect, pony up the bucks for the 3D version. It’s a L O N G movie. You will need a larger popcorn and watch how much water you drink. Love the depth of the characters, the acting, the music, the history that actually puts a lot of things in perspective. How it ends– not so much.
DJANGO UNCHAINED, the latest from Quentin Tarantino (and his part is much larger in this movie). It’s well worth the time and the $$ to see this film on the big screen. It’s bloody, really harsh but also has its’ moments of humor. Twisted Tarantino humor to be sure, but the acting is AMAZING!!!

I went the romantic comedy route and saw “This is 40”. Some seriously funny moments!
