Coachella is on my radar for a lot more than music and time spent in the California desert. It’s also a source for fashion and beauty trends and if often inspirational. For those who attend Coachella, it’s all about the preparation of getting there since there’s a lot of things that girls typically think about to go to this musical event + fashion/beauty trend show that Coachella is known for. One of the things that girls often think about is self-tanning because at this time of year, we girls are pretty pasty white.
We all want to rock a bronzed or golden hue.. to accompany swimwear, shorts, or crop tops. The question is how can we get the best-looking — and long-lasting — tan? Is it better to DIY or would sprays be easier?
Thankfully I don’t have to answer that question (or others) because I have a guest expert on tanning who will help you select the best options for you! Christina Lewis, owner of Organic Shimmer Tanning Salon is here to talk about the pluses and minuses of each type of tanning treatment!
It’s that time of year again! Coachella season! With the weather not cooperating in the “lets go to the beach and get a tan” department, many are wondering, “how will I get that perfect tan before I attend the festivities?”. Well look no further my fellow tanners! Here are a few tips on how to get your bronze-on and how to KEEP that tan going for as long as possible. First, decide if you would like to apply the tan yourself with a store bought self tanning lotion, gel, mousse, etc. Or if you would like to get a spray/airbrush tan. I will break down the difference between the two:
Store bought do-it-yourself tanning:
Pros: More affordable, comfort of your own home, warmer (as some people will find that getting sprayed is uncomfortably cold), privacy ( you won’t have to strip down naked in front of a spray tan technician).
Cons: It would be mighty difficult for you to get the self tanner onto the hard to reach area such as your back, therefore the tan most likely would not be perfect. It may get messy when you are applying it at home. 9 times out of 10, it will be uneven.

Spray tan – automatic machines:
Pros: More affordable than having a custom spray by a technician; very quick ( in as little as 30 seconds and your done); your back areas will be tanned more evenly than if you were to try and apply it yourself-awkwardly. Leave the mess at the spray tan salon, you won’t have to clean up.
Cons: Since it is a machine that doesn’t have eyes, you are getting sprayed the same way as everyone else, no matter what size you are, short or tall. Therefore, the tan may once again, be uneven. It’s sort of a one-size-fits all kind of experience. You will rarely get an in depth knowledge about how to take care of the tan post session. You may inhale the spray tan more since you are in a booth that doesn’t know when to stop spraying the face.
Spray/Airbrush tanning – Applied by an experienced technician:
Pros
: Accurate application of the spray tan ensuring an even tan as a result. The ability to request certain areas not to be sprayed if desired, about 50% of our clients prefer not to be sprayed on the face, and the other 50% prefer to be double coated. You will be educated on pre and post spray tan instructions. It’s very important that the tanner understands that a perfect application is obsolete if the tanner does not take proper care after the session. The session takes about 5 minutes. Less spray tan particles are inhaled by the tanner during the session ( however, at Organic Shimmer, particles are being sucked out at least 3 times more than any other salons with our custom engineered booths).
Cons: A little pricier ($35-120 per session depending on where you go). Having to get naked in front of a complete stranger may be awkward for some people, however you can still wear a bikini if tan lines are not a problem. Some tanners find it a little chillier than the 30 second automatic booths.
Once you pick which application you prefer, you will want to get all your beauty regiment done- mani/pedi, hair done ( if in salon), waxing/shaving. It is also suggested that you shower before the session. Use an oil free scrub, if there is oil of any kind on your skin, it will act as a barrier and repellent to the self tan. Lotion is fine if you have extremely dry skin, but again, you would want to use one that is not oil based and non greasy.
What a great tan!
POST TAN:
Make sure you DO NOT come into contact with any liquid of any kind for as long as the product/spray tan salon suggests. At Organic Shimmer, we advise our clients to not come into contact with any form of liquid for at least 6 to 8 hours. It’s best to get the tan in the evening so you can just go straight to bed. If you get your tan right before going out or doing something active, you are at risk of sweating, tan transfer (on clothes, skin on skin, etc), or you may stretch some parts of your skin too much and the tan will thin out resulting in streakiness and unevenness. You also will want to wear loose clothing immediately after your tanning session. Tight clothes, socks and shoes could possibly rub and absorb the solution from your skin creating a splotchy effect.
When it’s time to shower, make sure you do not use any soap that is oil based or too moisturizing. Soaps that have enzymes such as pineapple or lemon will shorten (if not remove completely) the lifespan of your tan. Any submerging into water for long periods of time will make the tan fade faster- swimming, baths, long hot showers.
To lengthen the lifespan of your tan, using a moisturizer with a light self tanner will ensure that your skin will be moisturized while prolonging your self tan with an even tone. We offer our exclusive Sorrel Tan Daily Self Tanner Moisturizer at Organic Shimmer. It helps you develop a natural glow if used alone, or keep your tan going if you already have a base. It’s the only self tanning moisturizer of it’s kind that does not have that messy bronzer or self tan smell. The consistency is non greasy yet thick and moisturizing with a very clean and pleasant floral scent.
