When one looks at current events – notably the election – but it’s almost November 1, and the holidays are but a hop, skip and a bit of a hard landing away. This time of year is lovely but it’s also stressful. What’s a girl (or guy) to do? One of the key recommendations I hear is ” Start working out on a regular basis”. Fitness is important but since it is FALL and we are soon to hit WINTER, this might not be the option we want to think about because poor weather will prevent you from hitting the gym. Just thinking about going to class when it’s around 32 degrees outside would give me pause and increase the stress one would feel.
Let’s reduce the stress and examine other options out that you can try— like yoga. I know you are thinking that yoga requires classes. Yes, it can require classes or learning yoga doesn’t require regular classes for most postures. Freelance writer, Ivan Serrano is our guest blogger for today! He chose to give you tips on how to teach yourself yoga.
“How to Teach Yourself Yoga” by Ivan Serrano
Yoga is more than a regular exercise because of its meditative nature, leading those who do it regularly to feel strong and healthy not only physically but also mentally. Having been around for centuries, it can be intimidating to do yoga especially if you want to do it in your own home.
Despite its history and its list of poses, you can teach yourself how to do yoga without having to attend a class. This way, you can do it at a time that suits you best and do it at your own pace. There are a number of things to keep in mind when you decide that you are going to learn to do yoga by yourself and the following are some of the main points to address.
Understand why you want to do yoga
Before you even strike a pose, ask yourself the reason why you want to do yoga. Is it to relieve back pain or to ease stress? Do you want to tone up or wind down after a long day at work? Are you looking to ease anxiety or help with your asthma? When you figure out the reason (you could have more than one and varying, depending on the day) then choose poses for different problems to help you achieve your goal.
Get to know the poses
You don’t have to study diligently, but having an idea of the poses and understanding where your feet go and where your hands go is good to feel more prepared when you start to do yoga. Moreover, don’t go overboard with a long sequence, instead, master the poses and then build on getting good at performing a long sequence with one pose after another.
Find online yogis who can guide you
If you don’t want the hassle of going to a class but you still need some guidance, then turn to the online yogis for help. There are millions of videos with yoga instructors teaching sequences according to level and issue, and to stay safe, start with the best ones.
Learn the safety tips
Speaking of safety, yoga can be dangerous if you are not careful and that’s why it’s important to take measures so that you don’t slip from a pose and hurt yourself or pull a muscle. There are a number of safety tips to keep in mind when doing yoga number such as using a towel when doing the poses so you don’t slip, finding an empty space in your house and using a mat rather than performing the poses on the floor.
Wear fitted clothing
Yoga involves bending and stretching, twisting and turning and because of this, it’s better to wear fitted clothing, so that you can do a pose without being distracted by what you are wearing. Not only that but if you are doing yoga in front of a mirror and you are wearing fitted clothing, then you will be able to see if you are doing the poses correctly. This way, you can continue to improve on your yoga skills and better yourself with every session.

LA-Story.com and I would like to thank Ivan Serrano for his efforts on this blog post. I know how to do a DIY on doing yoga via yoga books with help from online and DVD classes. While it’s great to be able to practice the sequence of poses regularly to get the body positioning correct courtesy of lots of practice, there are benefits to hitting a class once every 7-10 days!
