Jay Nash, indie music’s ” namebrand” , is a staple in the indie music scene of Southern California. While he now calls Vermont home, Nash has been on the road off and on now for the better part of 2016 as 1/2 of The Contenders with Josh Day. Day has the North Carolina vibe going on since he’s a while Jay is an interesting mix of Northeastern US and So. California.
Jay Nash is no stranger to this site. I have written about his music often and interviewed him many times. I have seen him so many times whether in a group setting or him doing a solo at Hotel Cafe or Saint Rocke’s (Hermosa Beach). It should be no surprise that he hits this blog again.
Here’s a solid description of The Contenders that’s found on their website and iTunes.com
The legend, Levon Helm said that if you give it good concentration, good energy, good heart, and good performance, the song will play you. If that’s true, then Jay Nash and Josh Day are well and truly played by the set of songs in their debut EP, “Meet The Contenders.”
The collection breathes with musicality and grit in the tradition of heroes—The Band, Tom Petty, The Dead, Dylan. Thrumming and heady, with a steady heartbeat and a hint of honky-tonk, this EP speaks of wanderers and highways, lovers and losers, good times and missed chances, swimming pools and movie stars, all with a ferocity born of hard work and honed skill.
Nash and Day have been players and poets for the better part of two decades; they have been making music, telling tales, drinking whiskey, and having fun touring together as The Contenders since 2012.
Paste Magazine sums it up quite well:
“You could say that The Contenders are a band greater than the sum of its parts, but that wouldn’t quite be fair to the parts: it’s the duo of Jay Nash and Josh Day, both distinguished musicians and songwriters with their own unique voices and perspectives.”
I would say this statement is 110% true. The music they create and the synergy they have on stage is amazing. And it’s well worth seeing them when they are on the road.
They are making their last two California dates on Thursday 11/3/2016 at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles in Stage (room)2 . Definitely a worthy way to spend your Thursday night in Los Angeles. Hotel Cafe is as much home to Jay Nash as his home recording studio.
