Earth Day: Ian Somerhalder Talks Conservation, Energy Upgrade CA + “Cold Wash Sunday!”

April is Earth Month. Earth Day itself is around the corner – Sunday, April 22! Earth Day is particularly relevant to Californians because we care about what is in our water, air and what our land looks like. I am not saying you don’t care, I am saying that Californians go “all-in” for these kinds of “take action” events.

Actor Ian Somerhalder may be best known for his work on the hit TV series, “The Vampire Diaries,” and the critically acclaimed drama, “Lost.” What you may not know he’s also been supporting environmental causes for many years, even launching a foundation which helps distribute funds and resources towards global environmental conservation, green energy development and educational tools.

Now he plans to participate in a Cold Wash Party being held in Los Angeles on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22. The event is designed to be a direct call-to-action for consumers energy-saving behaviors.

It’s one of the ways the initiative known as Energy Upgrade California is helping residents save energy, conserve natural resources, reduce demand on the energy grid and make informed energy management choices at home and work. It also helps make it easier for individuals to incorporate technological advances or behavioral changes using all available resources to reduce energy and choose clean-energy options.

California has long been recognized as a leader in environmental protection and preservation and has led the nation in energy efficiency since the 1970s. But there is still more Californians can do, including:

Ø Unplug: 23% of electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off

Ø Upgrade: Upgrading to LED lightbulbs will use at least 75% less energy, and last 25x longer

Ø Time of Use Change: Customers can cut bills if high energy devices like washing machines & dishwashers are used after 9 PM and before 5 PM

On Friday, April 20, actor and environmentalist Ian Somerhalder asked all Californians to join the “Do Your Thing” statewide movement, empowering them to benefit themselves and the state through smarter energy use. He explains the small steps everyone can take to manage their energy use daily.
I was invited to interview Ian Somerhalder for this collaborative campaign with Energy Upgrade CA> While I was not able to ask questions directly (I was sitting in an MD office at that time), I did write out the questions I wanted to ask him and someone read the questions to him.

One of the key things about this video is that it’s clear, that Ian Somerhalder and wife, Nikki Reed are extremely passionate about conservation and reducing energy usage. He’s stand-up guy who does more than just talk the talk, he walks the walk!

Cold Wash Sunday Event!

On Sunday April 22, in honor of Earth Day, Energy Upgrade California – the statewide consumer engagement initiative to promote energy-efficient behavior – in tandem with celebrity partner and environmentalist Ian Somerhalder will be holding a “Cold Wash Party” at a local laundromat (details below) in Los Angeles.

The event—which will invite attendees to wash their clothes in cold water instead of hot—is designed to be a direct call-to-action for consumers to reduce their impact on the environment by making smart energy management choices in their everyday lives.

Thank you to Ian Somerhalder for his time and to Lu Ann Sodano who went the distance to make this happen!
