Frozen Cocktails for Labor Day! Revisiting Great Recipes from a 2015 Post!

This post is 3 years old but it’s PERFECTLY suited for Labor Day 2018. Make sure you take a look at these tasty recipes. You might find that you don’t like a specific spirit. Think about substituting the one spirit for a NOLET’s Gin or any of the Van Gogh Vodka flavors! You will find great choices in these two brands. (And no… I wasn’t paid to say that. I am a HUGE fan of both brands!)

It’s hot here in Southern California and while we are adjusting to the calendar reflecting September, we know we still have some summer left. Raise your glass and toast the bittersweet end to a great season with a bittersweet cocktail! Switch up those traditional cocktails you always serve with these boozy frozen drinks that makes the warm weather more enjoyable. These recipes for simple Italian ice cream floats include a taste of Italy with Averna, Cynar, and Aperol that have a hint of bitterness to help cut through the sugar. They’re perfect for Labor Day activities – whether your heading to the pool, laying on the beach or just grilling in the backyard, mix up these refreshing drinks to sweeten the deal.

What are these spirits? Interesting flavors that will have you switching up the spirits that you are using on a regular basis.

Averna:

This spirit was invented by Salvatore Averna and it’s made on the island of Sicily where it is considered to be a traditional spirit. Herbs, roots and citrus rinds are soaked in the base liquor before caramel is added. Averna is sweet, thick and has a gently herbal bitterness. It is 29% alc/volume (formerly 32%) and distilled and bottled in Italy. Averna is a classic digestif, often served on the rocks or neat. It also is an ingredient in some cocktails.

Cynar:

Cynar is an Italian bitter liqueur made from 13 herbs and plants. One of the key ingredients is artichokes and the spirit gets its name from artichokes. It does not taste like an artichoke but it’s an element to create its’ unique taste. Cynar is dark brown in color, has a bittersweet flavor, and its strength is 16.5% ABV.

Aperol:

Aperol is an aperitif that is bright orange in colour. It has a unique taste, courtesy of a secret recipe and it has never been changed. It includes infusions of select ingredients including bitter and sweet oranges and many herbs (including rhubarb) and roots in perfect proportions.

Method:

In a tall glass, pour each liquid ingredient in order.
Add in the ice cream and stir. Add in a couple of straws and enjoy!
