5 Ways to Start Incorporating Self-Love Into Your Daily Routine

 By Casey R.

They say comparison is the thief of joy. And in a world that relies more and more on social media for connection, it becomes increasingly difficult not to compare yourself to others. We’ve become so focused on how others perceive us that we’ve forgotten how to perceive ourselves in a way that’s accepting and loving.

Fortunately, you don’t require a month-long meditative retreat to practice self-love. If you’re in this self-love rut, here are a few ways you can start incorporating self-love into your daily routine.

Take Care of Your Body

The first step in practicing self-love is taking good care of your body. This doesn’t mean weighing yourself or dieting, either. Those activities can actually limit how well you take care of your body. Caring for your body can mean different things to different people, but there are a few basic things you can start with.

Your body needs to move.
Your body needs fuel.
Your body needs rest.

First, let’s tackle “movement”. Moving your body can mean intense exercise for 30 minutes every day, stretching when you wake up in the morning, or even going for a walk around your neighborhood every day. It doesn’t really matter how you define movement — everybody enjoys moving in different ways. The important thing is that you make time for movement every day.

Whether you’re moving your body or not, it needs fuel to get through the day! Being mindful of how you fuel your body is key to remember. Eat foods that make you feel energized and full. Make sure you stay hydrated throughout the day. When you fuel your body with foods that make you feel good, your body will thank you.

Last but certainly not least, make sure you’re getting enough rest. Set a goal of getting at least eight hours of sleep per night. If your sleep habits aren’t the best, making an effort to get more sleep will have a noticeable effect almost immediately.

Surround Yourself with Things You Love

One of the most important factors affecting self-love is your mood. When you’re unhappy, you’re more likely to make harsh comments, point out your flaws, and feel bad about yourself as a whole. A great way to cultivate happiness in your daily life is to surround yourself with things that make you happy.

When you enjoy being somewhere — especially in your home — it’s easier to accept yourself and practice some self-love. Creating a space where you can truly be yourself is a part of self-love! When you feel calm and at peace in your personal space, it becomes easier to feel at peace in your body and mind.

Set Mindful Social Media Limits

Social media, as we mentioned above, can be detrimental to self-love. In fact, almost 60% of female social media users between the ages of 28 and 73 feel that these platforms have negatively impacted their self-esteem. With that in mind, it’s important to be mindful of how social media makes you feel.

If you notice that scrolling through Instagram makes you feel anxious and uncomfortable, it could be time to step away from that platform for a little while. When you focus on how social media activities make you feel, it’s possible to set mindful daily limits on your usage. When you can start setting those limits with the intention of minimizing comparison, it’s possible to let self-love in.

Practice Complimenting Yourself

This one might seem simple, but it can be tough. In most cases, you are your harshest critic. Take a moment to think about how you speak to yourself. Would you speak to your friends the same way?

If you answered no, then it might be time to address that issue. More often than not, it can be exceedingly helpful to practice being kind to yourself. One simple way to do this is by writing down a few things you like about yourself every day. Not only is this a good way to practice self-love, but it can also help you practice mindfulness. When you’re mindful of how you speak to yourself, it becomes easier to see yourself as a whole human with thoughts, emotions, and passions.

It should be noted that mindful self-talk takes practice. Fortunately, this self-love activity is a quick addition to your everyday routine.

Remember that Self-Love Is a Journey

The most important thing you can do to incorporate self-love every day is to remember that you’re on a journey. And like every journey, there will be slips and stumbles. When you stumble, remember to give yourself a break! Self-love — and all of the activities mentioned above — take time and practice. Stumbling and learning how to recover are both important steps in the process. The more you practice each activity, the more you’ll learn about accepting yourself, and the better you’ll feel about your self-love journey.

Whether you’re already on your journey of self-love or you’re getting ready to start, these five things can easily be incorporated into your everyday life. Are you ready to embrace yourself fully?
