Contributor Nancy Fernandez Shares “5 Reasons CBD Helps With Stress and Anxiety”!

Nancy Fernandez has written a post about how to handle the current stress and anxiety that many are feeling currently and the other outcomes related to this pandemic. She talks about using CBD for relaxing and reducing anxiety and stress.  (CBD is the lessor of the 2 actives from hemp and cannabis:  CBD doesn’t cause the euphoric effects that occur with THC).

5 Reasons CBD Helps With Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are brought on by the body’s natural flight or fight responses as a direct result of what your brain has deemed a dangerous situation. Both are part of being human, but chronic stress and anxiety appear to be plaguing us more often, leading many to live a troubling existence. Sure, you might be able to snag a prescription for anti-anxiety meds like Prozac, but wouldn’t it be nicer to pop a piece of the best CBD gummies for anxiety instead? On that note, let’s explore five reasons how CBD can help ease anxiety and stress from our lives.

  1. Balance in the Brain

Studies have shown that CBD soothes neurological ailments like social anxiety disorder (SAD). Anxiety is caused by blood flow to parts of the brain that make us feel anxious and stressed. But when CBD was administered to these patients, the flow of blood was redirected and the feeling of anxiety ceased. The research is still very new and ongoing, but researchers agree that CBD helps stabilize some of the brain activity that causes us to overthink and in some cases insomnia. Another research study involved children with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which in turn made them suffer from insomnia. After taking CBD, the children were able to relax and ultimately sleep.

  1. It’s in the Body

Partly CBD appears to work so well that it’s already a part of us. For example, the endocannabinoid system was discovered roughly in the early ’90s but we still don’t fully understand it. It’s a vital molecular system made up of cannabinoid receptors, metabolic enzymes, and endocannabinoid molecules that help the body maintain homeostasis. CBD affects more than just the cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), and can potentially increase the cannabinoids that the body produces on its own;  obstructing the enzymes that break them down. This is exciting when we look at the FAAH enzyme, since disturbing it appears to be beneficial when treating anxiety-related disorders.

  1. CBD and Serotonin

Research conducted on animals has indicated that CBD amplifies the initialization of the serotonin receptors. Basically, it’s likely that CBD activates the serotonin that’s already in your body. This reveals that it has the potential to improve the mental state of those suffering from schizophrenia, stress, anxiety, and mood disorders. It can also alleviate symptoms of chemotherapy and even addiction, Particularly those who are dependent on opioids. Further studies need to be conducted on human subjects, but the results so far have been promising.

  1. Lab Tested Edibles

Because prescription drugs like Prozac, Xanax, and Valium that are meant to treat anxiety can be either addictive or ineffective, many are seeking out more holistic options like edibles that can proudly label themselves as lab-tested. While the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate CBD products (except for very few pharmaceuticals), many labs like the SC Labs in Santa Cruz have been stepping in. along with baked goods like cookies, brownies, and chocolates. However, there’s no measuring of dosages involved, making it a particularly easy form of ingesting CBD. It can be a little harrowing to navigate some of the CBD products and distinguish the reliable companies from those that are making false claims. Luckily, here’s a reliable list of some of the lab-tested products you can trust.

  1. CBD Shuts Down Stress, Sending Us into Rest and Digest

Going back to the flight or fight response, humans are now in a stage where they need to reset this piece of their genetic makeup. The flight or fight response evolved in humans from being in constant danger; sending cortisol through the brains to get us ready for action.

For example: “That Mammoth is going to freak out and trample me,” or “There might be a panther ready to pop out from the trees any second, I’m ready to run just in case.”

But we don’t quite need that response anymore, so we are struggling to deal with the potentially dangerous effects of high-alert, persistent stress. This realignment of our evolved response has been properly termed the “rest and digest” response. The unraveling of centuries of evolutionary genetics isn’t easy, let alone quick. That’s where CBD comes in. It helps the body regulate itself by sending messages to our brain, boosting the neurotransmitters (specifically GABA) to slow us down and inevitably easing us into a more relaxed state.

Other steps of this process include CBD’s improvement on hypothalamic function, guarding the body against oxidative damage. When humans are chronically stressed, the hypothalamus is less likely to notice how much cortisol is floating around, enabling longer periods of stress and anxiety. CBD, however, can boost the abilities of the hypothalamus, catching cortisol and basically shutting it down.

Chronic stress can cause several issues. One of them, oxidative damage, occurs when there is an increase in high blood sugar and metabolic activity that can cause a spike in free radicals that, if left unchecked, can damage vital body tissue. When we relax, the body wraps up this process, and it’s not something to worry about. However, if we’re stressed over long periods of time, that’s where the issues persist. Being high in antioxidant compounds, CBD helps clear up free radicals and protects the body from damage.

As scientists and medical professionals delve into the world of CBD and cannabis, they are getting closer to understanding its benefits. If you’re considering using CBD to treat a chronic illness, consult with your healthcare provider. Also, know what you’re buying, research products, and learn the best way to introduce cannabis into your life so it works for you. When it comes to managing stress and anxiety, there are several reasons to try CBD. Whether to boost your mood, calm your nerves, or clear your mind – there’s no reason not to.
