GET READY SO CAL: CALIFORNIA LOCOS ARE SWARMING MANHATTAN BEACH!
Do you know who the California Locos are? Does the name resonate with you and your memory? If not, that’s ok. I am going to provide you with a couple of links to bring your California cultural history up-to-speed quickly! I wrote all three pieces and I am now pretty familiar with California Locos and I follow each of them to stay on top of what they do. As I was writing up Link #3, the venue where John Van Hamersveld was displaying rather surprised I had written of his work and California Locos.
It shouldn’t be any surprise that I am all about California culture. I am a California Girl.. who was born in So. Cal and spent summers at the beach with my family. That’s how summers were: my mom packed up ‘the kids’ and hauled us down to the beach, smearing sunblock on us and turning us loose. The surf culture was “strong” in our family and our friends.
The California Locos are like a bridge between my history and my future.

I bring you a great “not to be missed” multi-part event featuring the art and interests of California Locos- this one is called Somos Locos. (We are Locos). The best part is an exhibition of the LOCOS work as well as a book signing!!
Keeping my California friends up to speed on the California Locos is fun and definitely interesting. It’s also of interest around the globe. There will be a multi-event calender soon with Somos Locos events in the US and around the globe. There is already a firm event in November, 2017 for an international event:
November 2017:
California Locos show: November 2017. Location: Moments Festival sponsored by STAF Magazine, Malaga, Spain
SOMOS LOCOS.
“WE ARE LOCOS,” is the first exhibit of 2017 for the California Locos-the pioneering group of L.A. artists stemming from diverse So Cal worlds of Surf/Skate, Graffiti, Music and High-Art. This patchwork of aesthetics is unique and inclusive in many ways, and a reflection of the multicultural expression which L.A. has become in these contemporary times.. The Manhattan Beach Art Center will host a group show of original art works, rare ephemera, and fresh surprises from the original Locos artists: Chaz Bojórquez, Dave Tourjé, John Van Hamersveld, Norton Wisdom and Gary Wong.
These legends of rebellious art will also be present for the dedication and opening of Manhattan Beach’s new Skate Spot at Marine Avenue Park where pro skaters will christen the city’s brand new safe and legal spot for budding skate enthusiasts.
The skate spot dedication will be followed by a live concert event at the Manhattan Beach Art Center Parking lot, featuring food by Critic’s Choice Catering and live music from Steve Alba’s PowerFlex 5, Charlie Chan and the SOBs, and Los Savages.
“SOMOS LOCOS is not just an art exhibition, it’s an event!” said Martin Betz, Cultural Arts Manager for the City of Manhattan Beach. “We are trying to emphasize the unique relationship between artist, musicians and the classic SoCal experience of music, art, food, and drink that makes SoCal – and by inclusion, Manhattan Beach – such an amazing place to live.”
The day’s festivities will conclude with formal reception of SOMOS LOCOS at the Manhattan Beach Art Center. The exhibition shares the release of both a new Dusters skateboard, with an original LOCOS design by Duster’s Creative Director, Nano Nobrega, and a hardcover book release with essays by art scholars Charlotte Eyerman, Jim Daichendt.
The exhibition will be introduced by distinguished art critic Shana Nys Dambrot.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA LOCOS:
California Locos brings the work of five of the most compelling visual artists working in Los Angeles today:
California Locos!
Dave Tourje,
John Van Hamersveld,
Together and separately, these forces of artistic nature embody the innovative, lively, and rebellious spirit of Los Angeles.
Rather than suggesting a cohesive or coinable L.A aesthetic, California Locos presents a collision of visions – a kaleidoscopic perspective of the urban art experiences through highly individualized and expertly crafted works of art: from loose and spontaneous performance painting, to deliberate psychedelic graphics and painterly street graffiti. What unifies these artists is their shared conviction that being raised in this sprawling metropolis fundamentally and distinctively informs and guides their art.
