HellBoy II: The Golden Army drops on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 and for those who love this genre of movie– action/sci-fi/thriller– you will love this one.
Picking up almost exactly where the original left off, you have a fun movie that brings some insight into the characters via an introduction that takes you back to the past when HellBoy was truly a boy and his father was alive. It was Christmas Eve and Hellboy was reluctant to go to bed and so his father told him a story about the ancient truce between elves and other fantastical creatures. The truce came about because the Elven king had a special Golden Army (fearless, invincible, unstoppable, unbeatable) that just about wiped out the human race who. The Elven King locked up the army and broke the crown that commanded the army into pieces to prevent it from being used to destroy mankind.

Fast-forward a couple millenia and realize that the Elves barely exist and that man has just about destoryed the elven realm/world of forests and nature (part of the truce) and the king is old and with twin children who are now adults, there is hell to pay (metaphorically speaking). Prince Nuada has decided to resurrect the Golden Army and his sister, Princess Nuala, goes in search of those who can help stop her brother and hide the crown pieces and the map to the army. One catch- -they are psychically connected in mind and boy so they each know what the other is thinking, feeling and experiences the same ipain and injuries.
Red is back alsong with Liz, Abe and a new boss– Johann— to save the world and in the process, Red (of course) gets a ton of publicity and visibility to the public. Nuada tempts
Red with acceptance and leadership in his world if he would only change sides. Part of the plot twists is that LIz — living with Red– is pregnant and is hiding it. Abe is trying to bridget the gap & problems of the team particularly with the new boss, Johann, a protoplasmic German scientist who is a bit on the command in chief side of things.
Director Guillermo del Toro collaborated with Hell Boy creator Mike Mignola on the basic story and del Toro, scripted and directted the movie which is definitely got a seriously revved up engine compared to the first installment. If you like your movies with more than a jigger of machismo, then this is for you.
Lots of great spooky, creepy, icky creatures in this one — each one more weird and icky than the next. Much like the stuff seen in the Mummy but better and more vicious, this is a fun movie to watch IF you like the action-packed, high-octane movie that has a simple thread of a plot but fleshes it out nicely with stunts and well-nuanced performances of Perlman (awesome), Blair and Jones
