If you missed Spartacus Blood and Sand from last year, you have a chance to catch up and see the “prequel” for the next season of Spartacus B and S.
The prequel entitled Spartacus: Gods of the Arena gives you the back story about how the House of Batiatus came to be and how the characters evolved. Having seen the first episode, it’s devastating brutal, explicit and very much everything Rome was at that time.
The House of Batiatus is on the rise, basking in the glow of its infamous champion,Gannicus, whose skill with a sword is matched only by his thirst for wine and women. These are the times a young Batiatus has been waiting for. Poised to overthrow his father and take control; he’ll freely betray anyone to ensure his gladiators are in the highest demand. And he’ll have his loyal and calculating wife Lucretia by his side for every underhanded scheme, drawing on the brazen talents of her seductive friend Gaia when it counts. Together, they will stop at nothing to deceive the masses, seize power, and bleed Capua dry in this audacious prequel to “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.”
Batiatus and Lucretia collaborate and struggle to climb up the social ladder any way they can. Welcoming Gaia (an old friend of Lucretia’s whose husband has died) into their home brings a sexual tension into the house– not with Batiatus– but with Lucretia. Expect drugs, sex, nudity and brutality beyond what you saw in Spartacus Blood and Sand. This prequel seems more shocking than it’s precursor– but seems to set up well for the Blood and Sand that is later history– and how and why the ending of Blood and Sand was not to be unexpected.
Unfortunately due to recurrence of his cancer, Andy Whitman (Spartacus) had to be recast. That spot has just been filled and after this 6 episode prequel is done, the new Spartacus Blood & Sand will have season 2.
Hang on boys and girls. This is a different kind of thrill ride.
