It’s Mother’s Day and if you have been reading this blog that’s ALL I have been writing about. Now here’s something that works for moms, dads, grads, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries. Wine is a pretty universal gift but the kind and quality of wine that you gives speaks volumes- unless you know nothing about wine. Given that I won’t assume that any of my readers are oenophilse (wine lovers)– sorry, it’s not a slam, but I focus mostly on champagne and/or cocktails.
I started with wines before I went into spirits and I was in Napa, Sonoma and the Central Coast quite a bit.
Holman Ranch Winery is based in the central coast along the Carmel Valley Road– a home to many a fine winery.
For Mother’s Day and if you are planning on firing up the grill or staying low-key, these wines will be awesome- otherwise give them to the MOM(s) in your life and watch them light up with appreciation.
I was lucky enough to receive a bottle of each wine I am reviewing here. You can be sure this isn’t casual drinking- though it would work for that. For me, it’s something to share with friends and also when I need some down time to appreciate a small glass and just unwind. Rather than hit my favorite gastropub, I now have about 5 bottles to test drive!
This wine presents a classic taste of citrus and honey that lingers on the palate. This dry wine makes an ideal pairing with food.

Great price, crisp, fruity and lovely! I am a fan of Pinot Gris and particularly this one!
This wine exhibits all the best-loved traits of this varietal. A hint of lime, under-ripe kiwi, green apples, and minerality highlight each sip of this subtle, crisp wine.

One of the first white wine varietals that I latched onto was the Sauvignon Blanc! This is terrific.
Cold-fermented for three months in new French oak barrels, this wine exhibits delightful honey and toast flavors balanced with acidity. An ideal food wine, this structured and classic white is long on the palate.

For those who want a real Chardonnay with oak flavor– this is the way to go.

A happy medium between pinot noir and white wines– this one is light and festive- perfect for hot summer days!
2011 Pinot Noir Heather’s Hill
The wine exhibits a deep ruby color with intense boysenberry nose. The flavors are full of marionberry and black cherry which are well balanced and typical of hillside grown Pinot Noir.

I liked this one a lot. I tend to like younger pinot noirs for a fruiter, beaujolais-ish type feel. This was amazing.
However all of these wines are GREAT!
Aged for 12 months in French oak, this bright wine excites the senses with classic perfumes of sour cherry and blackberry. A hint of tobacco rounds out this light-bodied varietal.

2010 Pinot Noir Hunter’s Cuvée– SUPER YUMMY!!
This wine presents a bold, rich taste with subtle hints of blueberry and raspberry jam. It is intense and long on the palate. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels and 50% neutral French oak barrels for 7 months, this smooth red pairs perfectly with any occasion.
