We at LA-Story.com welcome celebrity hair stylist Dennis Stokely to our family as a Contributing Editor! His first article is about the Oscar style of the red carpet!!
“ACTRESSES ROCK MODERN AND EFFORTLESS HAIRSTYLES AT THE 87th ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS IN HOLLYWOOD”
By Dennis Stokely
Chignons, embellishments and hair extensions all show up on the red carpet at the Oscars.
These are my picks for the “Best” and “Worst” hairstyles from the “Best Actress” and “Best Supporting Actress” nominees on Hollywood’s golden night.
Best Hairstyles:::
REESE WITHERSPOON
Hair extensions are all the rage on red carpets everywhere and Reese looked fabulous with hers. Styled with a simple middle part and big loose curls her hairstyle worked perfectly with her understated makeup and strapless gown.
Grade: A+
JULIANNE MOORE
A beautiful chignon placed at the nape of the neck and a deep side part created a chic and age appropriate hairstyle for Julianne. Her hair looked radiant and timeless.
Grade: A
LAURA DERN
Fabulous hair color and a perfect looking velcro roller blowout styled with just enough fullness to look sexy and classic.
Grade: A
FELICITY JONES
A gorgeous updo with full, soft bangs, an unexpected bun placement and shiny texture all combined to create a youthful and polished hairstyle.
Grade: A-
ROSAMUND PIKE
It takes a stunningly beautiful girl to pull her hair back off of her face into a simple knot and look fab! Rosamund is that girl. Her hair looked chic and it photographed great from all angles.
Grade : A –
KIERA KNIGHTLEY
Although Kiera’s hairstyle was predictable, it worked. So many celebs request tossled curl patterns directed away from the face with center parts and natural texture. We see this hairstyle on every red carpet, but it is a good one. Kiera looked pretty.
Grade: B+
EMMA STONE
Old Hollywood inspired hairstyles are always a safe choice. Emma opted for a Veronica Lake “S-shape” face framing bang, sexy chin length bob. She had a sweet and approachable vibe.
Grade: B
Worst Hairstyles:::
MARION COTILLARD
Marion’s updo was styled so tightly to her head that at some angles it looked like a funky asymmetrical haircut. The shape was odd and the texture looked dull from too much hairspray. Her hairstyle made her look older than her age.
GRADE: C-
PATRICIA ARQUETTE
On her biggest night, the only misstep was her hairstyle. I understand that the intention was for her hair to look edgey and editorial, as if from the runway. But, so often these looks do not translate well on the red carpet. Patricia’s hairstyle looked sloppy and unkept and from some angles seemed distracting.
Grade: D
MERYL STREEP
A very rare miss from Ms. Streep. Her tightly pulled back French twist with an oddly placed hair accessory for embellishment was my least favorite hairstyle of the night. At her age, her hairline has receded slightly exposing too much of her forehead. A looser twist with softer bangs could have saved the day. But, her seemingly annual Oscar nomination almost guarantees that she will be back next year with another hairdo!

They do all look effortless. I know from wearing hairdos like these that it does not stay pretty for long if not done right. He made them all look lovely.
