It was no coincidence that this year’s Beltaine Event presented by Jymie Darling’s Babylon Gardens Apothecary was set in a location named after a movie star. Still sparkling from the Oscar win of top client Patricia Arquette for BOYHOOD, Darling chose Griffith Park’s Betty Davis Picnic Area with an eye towards catering to a decidedly “Hollywood” Goth crowd that fancies the darker “Left Hand” Paths of Paganism that appeal to rock stars like Marilyn Manson and fans of Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful” and WGN’s “Salem.” While there is no sure fire way to reinvent Beltaine for those with Gothic tastes, the event on May 2nd succeeded in presenting a program that was dark, delightful and mischievously sexy.
The emphasis on the sexual aspect of the holiday via the Bhakti (devotional) aspects of raising kundalini via Sahaja Yoga was taught by the Hollywood Witch, Marie Bargas, as a precursor to May’s “National Masturbation Month” alongside Bonnie Gayle’s all natural sex lubricant, SEX BUTTER. Kundalini was raised in a little over 5 minutes as promised and many participants were amazed that energy could be raised so quickly and effectively without the usual series of yoga postures and mantras. Once the energy was raised, popular belly dancer and performance artist, Cathryn MacEllerhan led a spiral dance around an opening May Day circle presided over by Ryan Owens that evolved into a sensuous frolic of belly dancing with a python that teased and delighted at every turn. The actual jumping of the Beltaine Fires was staged at the banks of the LA River under a canopy of lush vegetation with special candles crafted for the occasion by Pan Pipes, one of the oldest occult stores in the nation and a now historic Hollywood destination.
The Gothic and Occultist community has enthusiastically welcomed Darling home after a sabbatical to fill in the gap that has never been filled by events hosted by the Wiccan Community. She has risen to the occasion by returning to entertain as a Mistress of Mayhem, Ring Master of the Dark Arts Circus of the Stars and resident Voudou Baronessa with a mission to restore the popular Pagan Day Festival and host a highly anticipated Pirate Voodoo Halloween Party that sources say could be one of the hottest Halloween tickets in October.
