It’s a topic that gets talked about a great deal- eating right and creating a solid nutritional base for yourself as well as others. We have already learned that we can’t rely on sodas, fast food, processed food and too much sugar to provide the nutrition we need! Not only do we need fresh local produce, dairy and sources of protein, but often our lifestyles prevent us from getting complete vitamin and minerals array that our bodies require. We turn to supplements for the missing items and try to boost the intake in food sources as well. The reality is that the “old school” diet isn’t exactly old school anymore with the updates in technology, cooking and supplements that make a huge difference in how you feel. Dietician and author Brooke Alpert talks with pro cyclist Lucy Garner about how she keeps her strength up when racing.
Key Points:
There’s no question that nutrition plays a role in living a healthy and active lifestyle. For elite athletes like cycling pro Lucy, that is especially true. While many may think of multi-vitamins and protein, the role of a probiotic may be overlooked. Lucy and Brooke discussed:
–The nutritional preparation an elite cyclist undertakes in advance of a race like the Tour de France
–How digestive issues impact race training
–The importance of focusing on keeping up with nutrition during any fitness activities
Lucy Garner won her first junior world title at a road world championship in Copenhagen, returning a year later to claim a second world title at Valkenburg, Netherlands. Joining the senior levels at the start of the 2013 season, she claimed her first professional victory on the opening stage of the Tour of Chongming Island in Shanghai, China.
Brooke Alpert, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., is a nationally recognized nutrition expert and author of The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great and Look Years Younger (Da Capo, June 2013) and Healthy Eating During Pregnancy (Kyle Books, 2011). Alpert received her Master of Science at New York University and completed her training at Mt. Sinai Hospital, in affiliation with NYU. A former tri-athlete, Alpert is currently focusing on how nutrition can fuel our daily race in life.
Thanks to Lucy Garner and Brooke Alpert for the great interview!

I think that even if you are not athletic you need to balance your nutrients. The probiotic issue is a big deal. We need to both eat and digest a healthy diet.
