California Based1849 Wine Company Has Great Wines with Interesting Presentations. My Review: 2016 Pinot Noir!

You might not have heard of (or about) 1849 Wine Company unless you live in Northern California. This is a new winery and brand and it’s getting a lot of attention for their great varietals as well as their gorgeous artsy bottles.

This brand was new to me when it was presented to me. I think it has lots to offer- particularly lovely wines that feature grapes from Napa Valley, Sonoma and also Monterey! The blends sound fantastic and the varietals are worth giving the brand a shot.

About 1849 Wine Company:

1849 Wine
is a contemporary, up-and-coming wine brand that draws inspiration from the contemporary art movement of the 21st century. 1849 Wine’s vibrant labels capture your attention away from the endless sea of white, off-white, and eggshell labels that fill store shelves. We pride ourselves on creating California wines of the highest quality and expression. Every handcrafted bottle of 1849 Wine reflects the artistic spirit and dedication we have for the art of winemaking. Like an artist’s fascinating power to disrupt norms, transcend taboos and change our perspective, our goal is to do all three with every bottle of 1849 Wine.

DISCLOSURE:
I was sent a bottle to try one of the wines from this winery.   Without the sample, there would be no review of the wine and I wouldn’t be able to recommend this wine without having tried it. (And I do recommend a specific wine and this brand!)

The range of the wines  follows: ( they are listed as they appear in the photo above from RIGHT to LEFT. I know that’s weird but it allows me to do the review last!)

 Anonymous: a sophisticated red blend

A multifaceted, Bordeaux-style red blend that is brilliantly composed into nothing short of a masterpiece. This wine is inspired by the artist whose style is unique & complex and his palette colorful & bold.  Many know his work but his true identity is concealed.

Triumph: a Sonoma County Red blend.

Triumph by 1849 Wine Company is a Bordeaux-style red blend composed of a melting pot of distinctive grape varietals.  Layered in the right proportions they form a unified, exquisitely complex, and flavor-rich wine.

Declaration: a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Blended from Napa Valley vineyards and its surrounding hillsides, this wine is aromatic with notes of vanilla, hints of cocoa powder, and toasted brioche. A Declaration by 1849 Wine Company makes a bold statement with this brilliantly commanding, assertive Cabernet Sauvignon.

Au Jus: a Monterey County Chardonnay

This new world, oak mellowed Chardonnay is light & bright yet smooth & buttery and it exudes a creamy texture with flavors of vanilla, baking spices and stone fruit. It is full of personality.
Iris: Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Iris embodies a cornucopia of flavors.  The longer, cooler growing season imparts this Pinot Noir’s distinct characteristics which are revealed by our winemakers.  Crisp & bright on the nose with a velvety smooth finish and slight oak overtone define this elegant work of art.

How good are these wines?  Each wine on their list has won substantial awards! You can easily peruse their awards here: https://www.1849wine.com/awards/ .
The presentations of the bottles with the amazing artwork is the tip-off that the wines in the bottles will be something special!
The artwork is done by SABER and you can find out more about his work here: https://www.1849wine.com/artist/.

REVIEW of IRIS, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

I was offered a bottle of the IRIS, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.  I happen to love Pinot Noir wines and this one has made it onto my “favorites” list.  As a person who used to hit Napa Valley at least once a year (my brother and sister-in-law used to live up in Napa), I got to be fairly knowledgeable and trained my palate to identify various flavors.  Iris seems to bring out flavors of berries- but nothing particularly sweet. Think of blackberries and maybe a touch of blueberries as well as other great pinot flavors. The balance is lovely and makes sipping it so easy because you want those notes to linger on your tongue.  It’s a wine I would share with close friends at dinner. It’s an easy sip for me and I love it.   I have a real affection for pinot noirs and I want to have another bottle of this to pair with the fall and holiday cooking I will be doing.
