Celebrity Style Slam: Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer. Who's got True "Fashion" Blood?

Celebrity Style Slam comes back with a real twist to the attitude and presentation. NY-based writer Nancy Lichtenstein who covers NYFW for me joins me in evaluating the fashion content seen on the red carpet. While we talk about the fashion winners and losers, you can weigh in with comments about our perspective.
We started with the Golden Globes and will also run into the SAG Awards and maybe even Art of Elysium.
Nancy’s comments are bolded, mine are not- just so you are clear on who’s talking.
Celebrity Style Slam: Anna Paquin vs Stephen Moyer

We don’t typically critique those who are partners in real life but these two… well they just looked like they could handle it– fangs and all.
Stephen Moyer
Color
NL:
Basic black–that’s okay but it’s washing his complexion out. Maybe a dark navy to echo the blue in his eyes would have been a better choice?

SW: True to the vampire style but not his own best fashion sense, he would have been better in a warm grey, brown or even rust color. Black is hard to wear UNLESS he’s partnering a warm (think blood red) shirt which would have popped the suit up a bit0
Shape
NL:
I’m being super picky here, but if you’re not flawless on the red carpet, when are you going to be? This suit is not a great fit. Contrast it to the post we did on Robert Downey Jr. The sleeves are too long and the puckering in the crotch area (I can’t believe I just used those words in reference to Stephen Moyer but there’s no other way to describe it!) either indicates that the pants don’t fit properly, or that he had them balled up in the back seat of his car to go to the dry cleaners for a while.

SW: I love NL for her way with words. The suit hasn’t been tailored properly and might have just been pulled out of the closet without much thought. The sleeves wouldn’t be too long if he wore a longer cuffed shirt. The pants need serious tailoring. I don’t think they needed cleaning as much as pressing and I think more likely it’s the tailoring that needed to be done and he could have borrowed somethnig from the show!
Style
NL:
The skinny tie and the cut of the suit are very reminiscent of New Wave singers of the early 80’s like Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson–I’m wondering where’s the porkpie hat? Boys, the admonition that if you lived through a trend the first time, you shouldn’t revisit it goes for you too.

SW: This is also a bit reminescent of the Mad Men look too. I think Moyer was a bit younger then (but I could be wrong) to have gone through that skinny tie phase but the tie needed to be bolder, the shirt needs pizazz. He’s not attending a funeral — but a fun party. Think color, color, color in terms of shirt, tie and cufflinks.
Hair/Makeup/Accessories
NL:
This hairstyle is only calling attention to his slightly thinning hairline, and bangs on men are NEVER a good idea. The pocket square is too small and this outfit needs a bit of color to save it from undertaker.

SW: He needs a good styling from a pro hair-stylist. Guys tend to *hate* using hairstylists off set. Moyer need a lesson from DiCaprio, Clooney and also Hamm about the import of great styling and grooming. (And some AXE productts too) . The color comment– see above.

Overall Rating: Two stars.

<strong>Anna Paquin

Color
NL:
This print is WILD but I actually think it could look good on a redhead with a little cool in her skin tone. Anna just looks so pale it’s almost sickly here.

SW: Actually I like it on her because there are so many colors going on. Really a great deal of movement and shape in this color scheme makes it work. Not everyone has the confidence she does.
Shape

NL:
I actually think this shape dress would be flattering on her, if not for the V neck taken to extreme. She’s got great legs, so okay, go with the short skirt, but then don’t make your cleavage compete. With this much skin she’s channeling Heather Graham in Boogie Nights.

SW: The v-neck is a bit “low” but a piece of jewelry would have solved that problem plus that nice little whatever at the base of the V that’s part of the waistband definitely helps. Tights would have been lovely.
Style
NL:
I want to call this Palm Beach hooker and be done with it, but that’s a little too close to reality for comfort. If not for her considerable acting skills, I could totally see her leaning over a septuagenarian at the country club, cutting his meat for him and letting him take a good long peek.

SW: *giggle* I love Nancy. Well, let’s just say that Anna Paquin has no fear and she is fearless when it comes to fashion. She’s not afraid to be bold here and she’s pushing the fashion envelope. Personally, if that dress fit me, I would wear it *maybe with a cami — but then maybe not!

Hair/Makeup/Accessories

NL:
Her hair looks undone, like she went for a swim at the pool, air dried it and then ran a brush through it. In fact, I’m seeing some green undertones in the blonde reminiscent of chlorine staining, although that may just be it clashing with the colors in the dress.

SW: The messy up-do is the look and she did it right though it’s pushing it. The color of the photo and the weather might be affecting the color. See tomorrow’s podcast with Jill Kirsh about the SAG Awards.
The makeup is washing her out, and not only do I see a black manicure on her nails (we’ve already talked about how this is not good on the Red Carpet), if you look closely it seems to have tiny decals on it. Now we’ve gone from Palm Beach to a strip mall in Las Vegas.
SW: Brighter lip color would have helped-matching the warm color in the dress. When you film in Louisiana, what do you expect? You come to LA and cut loose baby!!

NL:
As for the accessories, the bracelet has some style, but it totally clashes with the dress–that would look amazing with a less busy, floor length dress in a solid color. I actually love her shoes, but again, they’re begging to be paired with a simple gown.

SW: Love the shoes!!! They rock. Love the bag — it works. I think the bracelet creates an edge that’s really killer. I love the look. I would wear it.. but then again, I love edgy.

Overall Rating: Two stars, for some successful accessories.

SW; Three stars. There’s a lot going on here and she wears it well.
Winner: Anna Paquin. I know, technically it’s a tie, but Stephen Moyer is boring me tonight, while Anna’s so bad it’s almost brilliant.
Thank you to Nancy Lichtenstein for her spot-on, incisive commentary. It’s really interesting because she’s on the East Coast and I am on the West Coast and yet we come up with similar conclusiions. (PS. I don’t see her writing until she’s finished the review).
