The Three Musketeers didn’t spend a lot of time in theaters but it’s worth a play if you have children or some gift to deal with OR if you are into a spin with Dumas classic novel with some serious tweaks to the action and special effects to up the
This adventure flick for the whole family stars Logan Lerman, Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich and Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz (Best Supporting Actor, Inglourious Basterds). With amazing special effects and explosive visuals, The Three Musketeers comes to life onscreen as Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Porthos (Ray Stevenson) and Aramis (Luke Evans), along with aspiring warrior, D’Artagnan embark on a dangerous and legendary mission across Europe to save both their King and country – “all for one and one for all.”
Film Clip: “Da Vinci’s Vault”
This version of the novel is obviously condensed version — with th D’Artagnan being 18 and the Three Musketeers being significantly older– which makes sense in some spots and others makes you wonder. The special effects and additional excitement of the Da Vinci Vault (you have to see the trailer to get what I am talking about) are cutting edge James Bondian types of effects that are truly out of place but PERFECT for those with kids who are too old for animation and too young for a lot of the film fare out there. In other words, it’s true enough to the story to maybe get a kid’s attention but exciting enough with modern toys (flying ships/blimps) to keep them watching. Little kids might like it too– but the noise of the cannons and stuff might frighten them. For adults looking for something of substance, this isn’t it. I was trying to figure out how they managed the physics of flying ships with balloons that kept them aloft and also shoot cannons. The idea is great but not for this story. It’s strictly a popcorn movie.
The Three Musketeers – Film Clip: “Milady’s Rooftop Fight”
pace of this movie.
The trick with this movie– and Milla Jovavich is amazing by the way– is that Orlando Bloom barely has any screen time; Christoph Waltz underplays the Cardinal Richelieu (or the scenes were cut). The actors playing the king and queen are amusing — particularly the king but the queen is spot on. The love interest for D’Artagnan, Constance isn’t given enough to do. Some of the key elements in the story have been cut to give room for the effects
