SuperBowl Commercial that Didn’t Happen.. Or Did Newcastle Create This to Snag Social Interest

In case you didn’t see this amongst the barrage of Pre-Super Bowl ad blitz online, here’s something that hit my Facebook feed and really caught my attention. Bear with me while I explain why this is so odd. I am sure by now that you have seen plenty of commercials for the SUPER BOWL on TV as well as online. Budweiser’s puppy & Clydesdale horse mash-up was really sweet. Sure to give some warm fuzzies during the football that no one will admit to feeling. There are other funny, silly and even twisted bizarre ones that feature Lawrence Fishburne as Morpheus from The Matrix in a wild ride of a commercial.

Newcastle Beer is a niche brand and a niche brew with an interesting campaign. While it wanted to do a big commercial that would be a branding bonanza for the beer that would result in lots of sell-through at local stores, pubs and restos. However what they wanted and what they are presenting is wildly divergent. The question is did they just bust a budget on various crazy-silly themed videos? Or is this all a planned campaign that is far smarter than the waste of time maze that it sent people scurrying to navigate.
With names like Keyshawn Johnson and Oscar Nominee Anna Kendrick, clearly these are people who are intelligent and would not be sucked into something where they didn’t get paid- or would they? It’s at this point I stop and take a 30,000 foot view of all this and realize (hopefully) that it’s a marketing ploy to get people to have invested time (watching videos) and feel emotionally engaged in this process, the focus group and Keshawn as well as Anna Kendrick (see her video at the bottom of the page).

Turns out, Newcastle couldn’t afford (or more likely, didn’t care to afford) a spot in Sunday’s big game.

“We think the formula for creating the most epic Big Game commercial of all time is pretty simple, but when it comes down to it, we’d rather have people drink our beer while watching other companies’ ads,” said Charles van Es, senior brand director for Newcastle Brown Ale, in a press release. “And to be honest, we don’t really have the money or permission to advertise on the game either.”
