Keira Knightley looked fabulous walking the Golden Globes red carpet. While she is pregnant, it’s still early in that game but the glow is unmistakable… courtesy of Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee and a new product or two.
I was lucky to get a transcript of the “beauty breakdown” of Keira Knightley from Chanel USA.
INSPIRATION
Keira looked radiant in her CHANEL dress this Sunday as she attended the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles.
Keira has the most exquisite features, and I feel so fortunate every time I get to care for her face. On this occasion, there was just as much focus on the eye as for the lip, and I just wanted to accentuate her natural beauty.
SKINCARE
Preparation is everything when it comes to beautiful, flawless, long-lasting makeup. Fresh from the shower on squeaky-clean skin, I spritzed CHANEL Hydra Beauty Essence Mist, then followed with CHANEL Hydra Beauty Micro Sérum. (NEW) To deliver a triple dose of hydration, I massaged in CHANEL Hydra Beauty Gel Crème. (I love the CHANEL Hydra Beauty range and have used it on Keira for many years—it delivers amazing hydration without leaving behind residue that can potentially interfere with foundation application.) I then applied CHANEL Hydra Beauty Nourishing Lip Care and allowed it to sit while I applied makeup to the rest of the face.
FACE
Foundation is the most visible/invisible part of the complexion: I always try to flatter the skin in a way that looks completely natural. For Keira, I started out by adding some luminosity to the bone structure with Chantecaille Liquid Lumière in Sheen. CHANEL Perfection Lumière Velvet Smooth-Effect Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 makes the skin appear ethereal, and I love the way this product diffuses light for the red carpet. So using CHANEL #6 Foundation Brush, I dabbed the product in the center of each cheek, center of the forehead and, finally, the chin. I took a dampened Beauty Blender sponge (a cool trick is to use CHANEL Hydra Beauty Essence Mist to moisten the sponge) and used it to melt the foundation into the skin, gently dabbing and blending. On the apples of Keira’s cheeks, I applied CHANEL Powder Blush in Rose Bronze. I like to conceal last, and then remove shine only through the center of the face with Laura Mercier Invisible Loose Setting Powder.
EYES
We were going for a smoldering, molten eye. Keira has beautiful eyes and beautiful brows, so it was just about complementing what’s already there. After curling Keira’s lashes, I took CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Tissé Rivoli and applied the mid-tones to the socket line. Around the bottom of the lashline, I drew a very dark, smudgy line—not a cat eye, but just to enhance the thickness and emphasize her lashes. I kept the lids naked and used a little pale concealer just under the eyebrow. I then applied CHANEL Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir, my go-to for awards season.
LIPS
Having applied CHANEL Hydra Beauty Nourishing Lip Care as part of my prep, my first step was to remove the balm with a cotton tip, leaving a soft, supple surface for a smooth and even lipstick application. I applied CHANEL Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Etienne (available March 2015). We used it like a stain: I painted her lips fully, then blotted off the color with a tissue and softened the edge with a cotton tip to avoid a hard line. I then applied a translucent powder around the edges of the lips to diffuse the color and light. To finish, I took a lip brush and applied more color just on the center of her lips and feathered it out. We were going for a bitten, stained berry lip as opposed to a strong statement lip look.

NSPIRATION
When I saw Keira’s dress, I was inspired by all the details—with the butterflies, the flowers. And on her handbag, there was a kind of greyish-blue sequin. I didn’t want the look to be too matchy, so I chose CHANEL Le Vernis Nail Colour in Sweet Star because it has a beautiful iridescence—kind of blue, purple and grey.
NAILS
I did Keira’s nails in a feminine oval shape. I used CHANEL Base Protectrice Protective Base Coat, then applied two coats of CHANEL Le Vernis Nail Colour in Sweet Star. I finished with CHANEL Laque Brillance Extrême Extreme Shine Nail Lacquer.
You can find all these product on counter other than the blush that is upcoming in March. The Hydra Beauty Micro Serum is available on counter now!.
I have a bottle and it’s the most luxurious drink of moisture my skin has had in months. My skin just drank it up! #yummy!
As you can see the beauty breakdown is pretty easy to replicate. It’s the perfect makeup for a bride or your red carpet moments!
