I love the idea of coffee-based cocktails. It’s a basic drink that can be hot or cold along with a splash of some spirits. I have created some coffee-based cocktails and I find the process is fun. I can easily tweak the cocktail to make it more of what I want to taste at that moment. It’s easy to make because the coffee base is something almost everyone has. Add in some favorite spirits– or some new ones that might have an unusual presentation– and voila’.. a cocktail that rivals that of your favorite bar. (And if you hate it, you don’t mind tossing it nearly as much as the one you had in a bar).
The six cocktails I am featuring below present a variety of coffee-based cocktails. You can tweak them to reduce the spirits or add in more. It’s entirely up to you–which is why I love mixing up cocktails at home. Often when I am making a cup of coffee, I will be tweaking the basic coffee by adding in some flavors like coconut. vanilla, chocolate, or even a caramel creamer. I go through my cupboard of spirits and pull out a couple and a shot glass so that I can do a taste test with a couple of spirits that might work (or not).
My recommendation to you is to try these cocktail recipes once or twice and then start tweaking the flavor of the cocktail. It’s a time to be creative!
Starward Cold Fashioned
Ingredients:
-
2 oz Starward Two-Fold Whisky
-
2 oz Mr. Black Coffee Liqueur
-
1 dash Orange Bitters
Directions:
Combine all in a mixing glass with ice and stir until very cold.
Serve in a rocks glass over 1 large rock with orange zest.
Black Coffee In Bed
Ingredients:
-
2 oz. Nocello Toschi
-
1 Espresso Coffee
-
2 Dashes of Whipped Cream.
Directions:
Warm with steam valve and serve with whipped cream on top.
A PROPER Coffee

Ingredients:

2 oz Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey
-
1.5 oz Boston Harbor Coffee Liqueur
-
1 oz Mandarine Napoleon
-
.5 oz Benedictine
Directions:
Shake/Strain into a Nick and Nora glass.
Garnish with hand-whipped cream and coffee beans.
PROPER Iced Coffee
Ingredients:
-
4 parts Cold Coffee
-
Milk or creamer of choice
-
Sweetener of choice
Directions:
Fill glass with ice.
Add Proper No. Twelve and cold coffee.
Add creamer and sweetener to taste.
Stir to combine.
Tanteo Chipotle Irish Coffee
Ingredients
-
2 oz. Tanteo Chipotle Tequila
-
5 oz. Espresso
-
1/2 teaspoon Granulated White Sugar
-
1 Teaspoon Brown Sugar
-
Whipped cream for topping
Directions:
Add fresh coffee to glass, stir in white and brown sugar until dissolved.
Add Tanteo Chipotle Tequila and stir.
Top with whipped cream.
CHV Night Cap
Ingredients:
-
2 oz. Crystal Head Vodka
-
1 oz. Chilled Espresso
-
1⁄2 oz. Coffee Liqueur
-
1⁄4 oz. Simple Syrup
Directions:
Add Crystal Head Vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker with ice.
Shake vigorously over ice for 10-15 seconds.
Strain into a chilled martini glass.
Garnish with grated dark chocolate and 3 espresso beans.
